The Rookie wrapped up season 8 with a shocking cliffhanger and the showrunners are hinting at what it means for season 9!
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for The Rookie season 8 finale
The focus of The Rookie’s season 8 finale was the team handling the transfer of captured international crime boss Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise). It went awry as Everett staged a wild breakout en route to the courthouse and escaped. The cops and the FBI joined forces for a raid on his ship that had some great action (especially Nolan driving a famous “Bandit” car into the water).
Tim was less interested in all that, however, than in misplacing his engagement ring for Lucy. Thankfully, he got it back and made a beautiful proposal on the beach, pouring out his heart to his former probie turned partner. Lucy, of course, accepted.
However, the long-awaited moment was ruined when a passing couple suddenly injected the pair with sedatives, a woman intoning this was for Everett and Lucy and Tim had black bags stuffed over their heads as the season ended.
That was an out-of-nowhere twist, and speaking to TV Insider, showrunner Alexi Hawley discussed the turn. He revealed that the writers had the abduction planned out all the way back when Tim refused Everett’s attempted bribe. He did share how initially, it was only going to be one half of Chenford, not both.
“No, I went back and forth. Well, I went a little bit back and forth on whether it should be one or the other that was taken, but then it ultimately felt like it’s their journey together. So yeah, so there was some initial thought about whether it would be both of them, but pretty quickly it was like that’s what it should be.”
It was a crazy turn, and it’s likely that season 9 begins with the cops not even realizing Tim and Lucy are missing for a while, assuming they’re celebrating their engagement. So how much danger are the pair in?

Hawley was, of course, cagey on details for The Rookie season 9, yet confirmed the cliffhanger is the first thing addressed and that the stakes are huge, not just for the captives but the rest of the team.
“Yeah. I think we should be worried for sure. I mean, as a show, we definitely push the envelope with some of our characters and stuff like that. And there are real stakes on the show. That said, I also don’t want to send the internet scrambling and freaking out too much, but I do think that, yes, that the stakes are real, that ultimately where we would find them in season 9, which is still a little — we need to figure it out, the writers’ room hasn’t started yet and stuff like that. But I think you’re right, there is a reason they were taken and not killed.”
Once the cops figure out what’s happened, they’ll be after Everett to call this off. It may be that the man is holding Tim and Lucy hostage to cut a deal to go free. He may even force the cops to break him out to save the pair. Hawley said he didn’t want a cliche story of Everett playing mind games from a prison cell, “so, yeah, it’s just about figuring out ways to make it feel organic.”
It’ll be a wait before The Rookie season 9 as it’s unclear yet if it’ll be in the fall of 2026 or, as with the last couple of years, is held until mid-season. Either way, fans are going to be on the edge of their seats to see if Chenford survives their twisted engagement.
The Rookie is streaming on Hulu.
