Chicago Fire boss weighs in on a Brettsy appearance in season 13
Could we see the return of Brett and Casey in Chicago Fire? The showrunner has chimed in!
When Chicago Fire began, Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) was the top firefighter for the station and had a few romances. That included a marriage to Gabriela Dawson, which sadly ended in divorce. Luckily, Matt bounced back with a relationship with paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Kilmer).
The two went from friends to lovers, although it took a hit when Casey moved to Oregon to take care of newly adopted kids. However, he made a return to propose to Brett, who accepted. Their wedding wasn’t quite what either wanted as, thanks to snafus, it took place at, of all places, a store aquarium, but the two still went out with a big event surrounded by friends and family.
Could Brettsy make a return in Chicago Fire season 13?
Both Kilmer and Spencer left the show with fans hopeful for a return. Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Andrea Newman shared the hopes the pair may make a surprise return appearance.
"That is always a possibility with them. There’s such a great, deep history on the show with all these characters, and we love bringing everybody back. Severide said it, we’ve all said it, Boden’s certainly said it: Once you’re part of 51, you’re always a part of 51. So we very much live that on the show, as well, and feel like any character that has been a part of our lives and is still around will visit, could come back, could be there any moment. So, yeah, that’s always possible."
There’s little word yet although Chicago Fire does have a history of bringing back some old faces. While Eamonn Walker has left the main cast as Chief Boden, he’s expected to make a few guest-star appearances. For now, fans just have to wait and see.
Who else is being highlighted on Chicago Fire?
So far, Season 13 is focusing on some of the new characters such as Brett’s replacement, Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon). All we know of the character so far is that she enjoys a good time at the local bars and talks about loving the adrenaline rush, but Newman promises there will be more focus on Novak and her past.
"There’s so much fun Novak stuff this season. That’s another character where there’s so much stuff to peel back. We really don’t know her all that well, and some things we know about her, like the fun side of her, we’re going to explore that. She has a desire to be kind of a party girl and have a great time, but there’s also this deep empathy she has for other people. We’ll explore what her origins were, in terms of starting to want to be a paramedic and help people."
Season 12 was hampered a bit by being only 13 episodes due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Season 13 will have the regular 22-episode season order, meaning there will be plenty of time for the writers to dig deeper into Novak. It could also mean a chance for a Casey/Brett appearance and fans of Chicago Fire are eager to see if a big return is coming.
Chicago Fire Season 13 airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
