Chicago Fire season 13, episode 6 recap and review: "Bird of Prey"
Severide has an issue with a ghost guns case, and Kidd wants to figure out what’s going on with Carver in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 6. Let’s take a look inside the new episode.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Chicago Fire season 13, episode 6.
We knew Chicago Fire would bring up something about Chief Dom Pascal during the new episode. It didn’t quite go in the way we expected based on the promo, though. It looks like this is going to take a few episodes to get to the bottom of.
Severide works with the Illinois State Police in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 6
When there’s a huge fire at a storage warehouse, Severide decides that he wants to stick around to see what the actual cause of it was. It doesn’t help that there are ghost guns that pulls in the Illinois State Police.
However, it’s soon clear that there is something bigger going on. While investigating the cause, Severide and Tony end up in a neighboring unit. The fire burned through everything, but there’s a clean section. This section had an item that has since been removed, and Severide wants to figure out what it is.
At first, Pascal is on Severide’s side. He goes to see the man heading the investigation for the state police, Bishop. However, Bishop stalls things and then shares that the ADA won’t let him have the evidence that was removed. He claims that there’s some sort of bigger investigation in this, and the aim is to get the bad guys off the streets.
Well, we can tell that Bishop is up to something. Pascal can also tell, but it’s clear that Pascal feels somewhat threatened by the way Bishop is acting. Pascal tells Severide to step down, which naturally makes Severide unhappy. We know Severide well enough that he will do what he can to keep the people of Chicago safe.
Kidd is on Severide’s side. The two decide it’s time to learn more about Chief Pascal. Maybe that will get to the bottom of why he’s protecting Bishop.
Severide realized what happened in Pascal’s past. It was when Bishop pulled up the name Hendricks that Pascal started acting strangely. Severide decided to do some digging. Hendricks was a fire chief in Miami, but ended up being a dirty guy. By bringing this up, Pascal finally opens up a little. He knows that Bishop is dirty, and Bishop was testing Pascal to see if he would by loyal. Pascal was trying to keep Severide out of trouble.
We see this sort of story a lot. Someone dirty has plenty of people who will work for them, but we get to see how good can win out. It’s just going to mean Pascal and Severide are put to the test to protect the ones they love to do the right thing. At least it’s clear that Pascal could be worthy of being chief of Firehouse 51. Now it’s just whether he can see it through in the way that Boden would.
Kidd needs to deal with Carver
With everything going on with Carver, it’s not surprising that he’s making mistakes at work. He sleeps through the bell, and he forgets things. Kidd isn’t angry, though. She’s worried about him.
Kidd has known Carver long enough to know that this isn’t right. While she didn’t like him at first, he proved to be very different to the man she knew during the time at the Academy. With Violet and the blow up at Violet’s party, it’s clear that Carver is struggling with something. The problem is that Carver doesn’t open up to people. He doesn’t feel like part of the family just yet.
There’s only so much that Carver can hide. It’s all going to come crashing down, and that happens at the end of the episode. When Ritter points out that Carver forgot to fill up a tank, Carver kicks off about his work being double checked. He’s losing friendship points with Ritter now as well, who doesn’t like being called out when he’s trying to be a good friend.
It’s not surprising at the end that Kidd ends up sending Carver home. Tory wants Carver to transfer to Austin FD. This would likely help to get rid of her insecurities about Violet, but it’s not going to solve their relationship issues. I still don’t understand why Carver is still with Tory after she deleted messages from his phone. She’s made it clear she doesn’t trust him by doing that, and she’s also hinted that she could end up being crazy.
Mouch deals with the floor pigeon
While all that goes on, we get the humorous storyline of the episode. Mouch isn’t happy about a bird that seems to keep attacking him on the floor.
Well, there is a very good reason for that. It turns out that one of her eggs fell out of her nest. As Mouch realizes this, he does the right thing and puts the egg back in the nest. By the way, there is no proof that getting human scent on an egg will cause a bird to abandon her young. It’s was the right thing to do.
Overall, I’m glad we get to learn more about Pascal. This is a chance for him to stand up to the dirty cops and firefighters, and it’s a chance to prove that he has the backs of his firefighters. It’s not going to be easy to prove arson and get Bishop put away, but Pascal and Severide aren’t going down without a fight.
