Chicago PD showrunner has an update on a real One Chicago crossover

We haven't had a real One Chicago crossover since before the pandemic. Will we get one in the 2024–2025 TV season? Chicago PD boss Gwen Sigan weighs in.

The last time we got a three-way crossover in the One Chicago universe was in October 2019. At least, that’s the last time we got a real crossover event. There have been mini crossover moments since then.

After that, the world shut down. Filming became harder, and then the strike action happened in 2023, so there weren’t as many episodes in the season. This is the first fall where things have felt somewhat normal and we’re likely to get full seasons for our favorite shows. Does that mean a One Chicago crossover event again?

Chicago PD boss wants a One Chicago crossover to happen

Gwen Sigan, the showrunner of Chicago PD, told TVLine that people want the crossover event to happen. There are always talks about how and when it could work.

"It will just be about if it all aligns and works out. But yeah, hopefully."

There are a lot of moving parts in the world of TV. We have filming schedules, locations, and the costs of production to factor in. A crossover event can lead to the cast and crews working longer hours, and this leads to a higher wage budget.

NBC is currently looking for ways to cut down on costs of production. One of those is for the actors to not be in all episodes. Chicago PD season 12 just saw Burgess missing for the first two episodes. In season 11, Torres was missing for the first three episodes. To then add in a big crossover event, it could lead to issues with the costs.

The good news is that everyone is open to a crossover happening. It all depends on if the stars align for this one. Let’s hope that the three crews are able to figure something out.

And I’d like a crossover like “Infection.” Other crossovers have been very much focused on the individual shows. “Infection” was the first real crossover where all three shows were mixed together, giving us the feeling of a three-hour episode to solve the problem.

One Chicago airs Wednesdays starting at 8/7c on NBC. Catch up on all three shows the next day on Peacock.
