One Chicago EPs haven't ruled out a crossover for the 2024-2025 TV season
As the One Chicago shows begin production on their new seasons, a big question arises: Are we going to see the return of the crossover epics?
One Chicago has always been notable for its amazing, connected universe. Characters from one show will pop into another, whether it’s the cops from the P.D. aiding the firefighters on Fire or both sides dropping into Chicago Med to check on a victim or wounded comrade.
There are great relationships across the shows, such as the Halstead brothers and firefighter Mouch married to P. D.’s tough Trudy. There’s also Molly’s being a hangout for all three casts. It’s always great to see these characters interact and make it believable that they all live in the same city.
For a while, a constant was for the shows to do a big crossover event spanning the three series. It could sometimes be just Fire and P. D., but occasionally work in Med, too. They usually involved a big disaster like an apartment building fire leading to a murder case. The last was a 2019 storyline involving (in an eerily prescient storyline) Chicago brought to a standstill by a deadly virus.
We’ve seen some minor bits of characters appearing in other shows, but we have yet to see another big crossover from the series. So can we get that in the next TV year? Here's what we know!
Are we getting a One Chicago crossover event in the 2024-2025 season?
The key reason the crossovers were halted was the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. That not only curtailed the production of the shows but there were also safety protocols for filming, which meant mixing so many casts together wasn’t a good idea. Afterward, budgets were a consideration as NBC wanted to cut on costs.
Last year saw all three shows affected by the 2023 Hollywood strikes for 13 episode seasons so there was no time for any crossover event. However, speaking to TVLine, Chicago Fire showrunner David Eigenberg said they’re hopeful as “we like it.”
His words were echoed by Chicago Med showrunner Jessy Schram.
"There’s always talk [of crossovers], but we need to be able to schedule it in — and we have really demanding schedules."
The logistics of these crossovers are an obvious challenge. They have to craft the right storyline that can fit all three series, not to mention balancing them with different writers and casts. It’s a costly endeavor and pretty complex to pull off. It’s among the reasons why the shows usually saved these for a sweeps event and why it’s been so long since we had one.
It would be great to see another big crossover between the One Chicago shows and a reminder of the amazing excitement they bring as fans would love to see all three series coming together in one epic event. Hopefully it happens!
One Chicago Wednesdays return Sept. 25 starting with Chicago Med at 8/7c on NBC.
