Doctor Odyssey may have just given fans the romantic twist they never expected! What does it mean for the show?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Doctor Odyssey Episode 6

Since Doctor Odyssey started, there has been an intriguing love triangle brewing between Max (Joshua Jackson), the new doctor on the Odyssey cruise ship and his nurses, Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale). Midway through the pilot, Max related that he knew Tristan was in love with Avery, and Tristan did not deny it. That came after Max and Avery hooked up and then tried to keep it professional.

The odd romantic subplot has continued for a while as Avery is well aware of how both men feel and is trying to handle it. The latest episode had the ship hosting a big wedding with Avery revealing she'd once been married only to discover on the honeymoon that her new groom was cheating on her with their mutual best friend.

The wedding had the usual issues, like a couple stuck in a compromising position and the bride's mother (Margo Martindale) coming down sick with extremely bad sunburn. That somehow caused her to talk Max and Avery into standing in for the bride and groom at a rehearsal, which angered Tristan. Also, the bride (Kelsea Ballerini) suffered a bad reaction to using a weight-loss drug to fit into her wedding dress.

The hijinks ended when the groom, Eric, came with the same case of ringworm as the best man, leading the doctors to assume the two were sleeping together. Eric confessed to being a sex addict who could have infected dozens. Clearly not in the best mental shape, the man jumped off the ship with Captain Massey (Don Johnson) announcing it to the passengers. Also, the bride revealed she's known about her would-be husband's problems and that she was the one sleeping with the best man.

How did we get the wild "throuple" in Doctor Odyssey?

After all that, Avery and Tristan headed to the ship's kitchen to indulge in the now-unneeded wedding cake. They were found by Max who brought up how short life was and offered some champagne as the trio sat by the pool.

It turned to what they wanted out of their lives, a wish list and Avery and Max were surprised to learn Tristan never had a three-way. They headed to Max's cabin for more drinks and talked before Avery talked of a three-way and "I'm game." She invited Tristan for a long kiss as Max watched before Avery said, "Join us."

So yes, it looks like Doctor Odyssey is indeed giving fans a "throuple" of Max, Avery and Tristan together in a bizarre relationship. This is naturally going to be wild to play with in the future. Tristan has always had a thing for Avery, so this is a dream come true for him. Avery, however, may simply be treating this as a fling and closer to Max. For Max himself, it's unsure where he falls in this.

What could happen next on the series?

There's a question of how these three can remain professional after such an experience, although it may oddly bond them. Also, Massey would obviously not be happy to learn what's going on and could get them in trouble.

The moment also adds to the growing fan theory that the entire show is all a dream Max has while he's stuck with COVID-19. It does seem pretty crazy for a doctor to hook up with both his nurses and the whole thing is so surreal that it's natural to assume it was a dream.

Nevertheless, Doctor Odyssey just went on a wild romantic tangent that has fans more excited than ever to see where the journey goes!

Doctor Odyssey airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
