Doc is ready to wrap up its second season on April 14, and with a third season renewal already done, the medical drama is set to end its second year with a bang. Deadline showed an exclusive look at the two-parter, which will involve a deadly virus breaking out at the hospital.
The article on the two-parter, “Stuck/Happy Birthday,” will have Amy (Molly Parker) risking herself to save her former friend turned enemy Richard (Scott Wolf), who recently returned to Westside Medical.
Per Deadline, "In the finale, a mysterious, fast-acting, and extremely deadly virus triggers an emergency lockdown on the 6th floor of Westside Hospital. Then, in an effort to save a crashing Richard (Wolf) from a deadly virus, Amy (Parker) gets infected with it. Amy’s ex-husband Michael (Omar Metwally) and the team work tirelessly to help her and the other patients, but their experimental treatments fail, and Amy becomes critically ill.”
That sounds like a major turn in the drama, as Michael and Amy’s on-off lover Jake (Jon Ecker) will both be trying to save her while also trying to stop this virus and help other patients in need. It also seems that Amy will be distracted by her mentor and former boss, Joan (Felicity Huffman), suffering her own medical emergency while the virus continues.
The show producers have hinted that there will be some character deaths in the finale, and it may include Richard. That’d be a powerful turn if he and Amy finally reconcile over their conflict just before he meets his end. The episodes will also introduce Blair Underwood as Dr. Ben Grant, who will become a regular for season 3.
As if the episode isn’t big enough, the show will also feature a rare guest star turn from Emmy Award winner Judd Hirsch. According to Deadline, Hirsch plays “Herman Zweig, a Holocaust survivor with an infectious zest for life and comes to Westside on the day of his 90th birthday for routine treatment… but when tragedy strikes and the hospital suddenly goes on lockdown, his optimism will be put to the test.”
Hirsch is known for numerous TV roles, such as the comedy Taxi (which earned him two Emmy Awards), along with Dear John, Numb3rs, Damages, Forever and The Big Bang Theory. He’s also earned Oscar nominations for Ordinary People and The Fabelmans. This will be his first TV appearance in three years, but Hirsch has proven a master of stealing the spotlight in any small role.
Hirsch looks set for a good role here to bring extra pathos to what’s already a powerful storyline. That will make the Doc season 2 finale even more of a must-watch as the show closes out a strong sophomore season.
Doc season 2 finale airs Tuesday March 14 at 8/7c on Fox.
