Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman will be back for another season of Grey's Anatomy.
Grey's Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis confirmed the actors' return in an interview with TVLine. "Both Ellen [Pompeo] and Scott [Speedman] are super busy, so we'll take them as often as we can get them," Marinis said.
Marinis is most likely referring to Pompeo's new and upcoming projects with streaming giant Hulu, and Speedman's new ABC drama, R.J. Decker. However, despite their busy schedules, the actors found time last year to recur on season 22 of Grey's. Therefore, we might see something similar this year.
What Meredith and Nick’s roles might look like in season 23
In the season 23 trailer, Catherine (Debbie Allen) introduces Meredith to Dr. Seth Norton, who asks for Meredith's expertise on their new VIP floor. However, it's unclear what Seth's request entails. For example, would Meredith offer casual advice, or would it require her to take on a formal administrative role? Either way, season 23 might see Meredith take on more work at Grey Sloan.
Nick doesn't appear in the trailer, but based on Marinis' comments, we know he's around somewhere. One theory is that he could still be recovering from his kidney surgery. In the season 22 finale, Nick was severely injured in a bridge collapse and left with extreme abdominal trauma. Thankfully, Miranda and Meredith were able to work together to not only save his transplanted kidney but also his life.
Grey's Anatomy's season 22 finale also saw Nick and Meredith take a big step in their relationship. It was scary for Meredith to see Nick on his deathbed, and it helped her realize just how precious their time is together. More importantly, the couple has established a fulfilling life together with their kids. Therefore, after Nick made it through his surgery, Meredith popped the question. Spoiler alert: Nick said yes!
It wasn't always clear whether or not Meredith would get married again. But her relationship with Nick has grown immensely over the years, so it makes sense that she's ready now to take the big leap again. However, Marinis notes that the couple's future wedding will be a little more low-key than fans might expect.
"It's Meredith Grey, so don't expect a poofy white dress," Marinis warns.
For now, we can assume Meredith and Nick will prioritize the important things in their lives. They both seemed fulfilled in their work. Not to mention, they're pretty busy raising three beautiful children at home. All in all, we're looking forward to seeing where season 23 takes the couple.
Grey's Anatomy season 23 premieres Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10/9c on ABC.
