Another NCIS: Los Angeles vet is making their return to the NCIS universe, but in a surprising new role. While fans of the hit franchise already knew LL Cool J would be back as Sam Hanna in a new spin-off set in New York, it was recently revealed Eric Christian Olsen is bringing behind-the-scenes credits to NCIS: Origins when Season 3 airs in the fall.
Olsen starred on NCIS: Los Angeles as Marty Deeks, starting with a guest appearance before eventually joining the Office of Special Projects alongside Hanna, G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell), and his future wife Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah). Fans absolutely loved Deeks and the humor he brought to the show.

Eric Christian Olsen signs onto NCIS: Origins as executive producer
Now he will be part of the crew of NCIS: Origins as an executive producer for Season 3 under Cloud Nine Productions. NCIS: Origins follows the early years of NCIS’s Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he went from being a probie under Agent Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) to the agent we know him as today.
Season 3 will unfortunately only air 10 episodes, airing Tuesdays at 10/9c following NCIS and NCIS: New York. The season 2 finale ended with Austin Stowell’s Gibbs sharing a passionate kiss with Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez after months of romantic tension. Now we’re excited to see how the show will continue, especially Olsen returning to take part in the project.
Olsen has had plenty of executive producer credits to his name, including the ongoing CBS series Matlock. This will mark Olsen’s return to the NCIS universe after portraying Deeks for 14 seasons on NCIS: Los Angeles.
Many previous cast members have returned to the NCIS universe after leaving their respective shows, whether through cancellation or their characters leaving in some form. While we still would love to see Olsen return to NCIS on camera so we have an update on Deeks, having him part of the executive producer team is still exciting.
As for LL Cool J, he will star alongside Scott Caan on NCIS: New York, reprising his role as Sam Hanna. Maybe this will be a way we can also see Olsen appear on that show as well, if he decides to bring his character to life on screen again.
While NCIS: Los Angeles is not streaming, you can watch the first two seasons of NCIS: Origins to catch up on the series before season 3 premieres this fall on CBS.
