FBI season 9, episode 2 followed the case of an undercover cop named Clint Mathis who was killed after briefly leaving cover. The team needed to determine who killed him and whether or not his former police partner was involved.

Clint Mathis was in the middle of an undercover assignment when something led him to briefly leave his cover. This, unfortunately, led to his death, so the team was called in to find out why. At first, they thought his current investigation was what led to his demise; however, this wasn’t the case.

When photos were discovered showing an altercation between Mathis and Hugo Reyna, who was his previous partner before he switched departments, it looked like his killer was a cop. Mathis was set to testify in the trial of a man named Cobi Harkes, who claimed that Reyna had planted heroin in his vehicle to get him in trouble. Even though bodycam footage appeared to show nothing in the trunk, Reyna found it but didn’t have his camera on.

Reyna swore he didn’t plant the drugs and that the lead came from an anonymous tip. He was distraught over Mathis’s death, and he seemed to have an alibi for the night of the murder. Eventually, after speaking with Mathis’s daughter, the FBI learned he had given her a teddy bear, in which he stashed a SIM card of photo surveillance of a rival gang member of Harkes’s, Fernando Balboa.

Reyna found Balboa first, and it was determined he was the person who killed Mathis. However, he claimed he did not put the drugs there himself, so he wasn’t the one who framed Cobi. However, he was still part of it due to the person who started it all. When they dug deeper, they learned his lawyer was none other than Tab Harkes, Cobi’s brother.

Tab wanted to put an end to the feud between the two gangs, but Cobi was standing in the way. He used his connection with Balboa to obtain the heroin and plant it in Cobi’s car. Then when Mathis confronted Balboa with the actual truth, he ordered his murder.

At first, Tab refused to talk, but then when he realized his brother was also informed of his actions, he realized it was safer for him to go to the FBI.

This was a big betrayal that was unmasked, and at the same time, Jubal Valentine became suspicious of members of his own team. He noticed how secretive Isobel Castillo was being, and eventually, he followed her when she went to meet with OA.

Now that he knows about the undercover work, we wonder how this will impact the agents in the next episode, especially once Eva and Scola find out the truth.

FBI airs Mondays on CBS at 8/7c.
