So, how long will Georgie and Mary be arguing? The season 2 finale suggested that things may not be okay between them for a while, following Mary's intention to date Georgie's arch-nemesis, Fred Fagenbacher, and Georgie's decision to keep Mary out of Ceecee's life. Georgie's declaration is swept under the rug fairly quickly, as Mandy and her parents have no issue with bringing Ceecee to see Mary without telling Georgie first. But while Georgie's plan to separate Ceecee from Mary may end fairly quickly, as even Georgie himself seems to recognize the unrealistic aspects of it, the premiere does set up an interesting question about just how long it will actually take for Georgie and Mary to get back on the same page.
In The Big Bang Theory, Georgie tells Sheldon how Mary and Missy had both become his responsibility following George's death and Sheldon's leaving for graduate school in California. While Sheldon was always under the impression that things were fine, Georgie explains that was not the case.
Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage has shown these issues in glimpses, especially through Missy's growing rebellion against Mary. But the season 2 finale and season 3 premiere suggest that not everything was always okay between Mary and Georgie. Georgie has shown to be protective of his father's memory. So, Mary's interest in dating throws him off guard, especially given that Fagenbacher is someone Georgie cannot stand. However, it does raise questions about how the two will get through this.
In The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon is shocked by his mother having a sexual relationship with another man. But that was years after George's death, and it appeared to be more about Sheldon being in shock that his mother was behaving unexpectedly out of character, in comparison to his belief of how she normally behaves, more so than anger or loyalty to his father. But for Georgie, the timeline is far closer to George's death and therefore adds a little extra emotional investment in the idea that Georgie would have to contemplate the idea of his mother being in a committed relationship with a man who is not his father.
Ultimately, viewers of The Big Bang Theory know that Mary never ends up in a stable, romantic relationship. She still appears to be single and far too invested in the lives of her children rather than being involved in anything else. Still, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, committing to this plotline, could mean that the show is willing to explore a side of Mary that The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon never had the chance to. It also gives the show an opportunity to deepen Mary's relationships with both Georgie and Missy, assuming she returns and is aware of her mother beginning to date again.
In order to match Sheldon's awareness in The Big Bang Theory, he can never really know anything that would contradict how much he really knew. Granted, given how Young Sheldon was willing to ignore most of the details about Sheldon's childhood to tell their own story, there is always a chance that Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage finds a way to incorporate Sheldon into the story while Mary is undergoing a transformation that sees her coming out of her initial grief and being willing to date again.
While Mary's latest relationship prospect is not promising to be around long-term, it does set up a foundation that shows that Georgie has to be willing to accept that Mary could become serious about someone someday and that he cannot punish her by separating Mary from her granddaughter just because he is upset about it. Georgie has plenty of justified reasons to dislike Fagenbacher. Perhaps Georgie may have reacted better had Mary's new love interest not been someone who has already given Georgie so much strife. Still, the opportunity to tell a story that shows Georgie simultaneously trying to step up as a husband and father while struggling to be a supportive son can add layers to the character.
Georgie's growth from Young Sheldon into Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage says a lot about the show's commitment to fleshing out a well-developed Cooper family. During Sheldon and Georgie's initial arguments in The Big Bang Theory, it is easy to understand Sheldon's side of the argument, even without having all the information. After all, there were years of content that showed exactly who Sheldon Cooper was. But devoting more time to understanding Georgie's life also allows their argument about their childhood and young adulthood to become much more meaningful.
