Ghosts has missed a mark by not making Jay permanently see the spirits

In the two-episode Christmas 2024 special of Ghosts, Jay finally got to see and interact with each of the spirits. The show has missed a mark not having Jay permanently see them.

Up to now, only Sam has seen the spirits in the house in Ghosts. However, during the 2024 Christmas special, Jay was temporarily able to see and speak to each of them. The show should have made this permanent.

Jay ended up possessed by Pete during Ghosts season 4, episode 8. People have been possessed before, and driving over the boundary has been the way to kick the ghost out of the body of the living. That wasn’t possible with Pete, though, whose ghost power is crossing the boundary.

It led to Sam performing an exorcism. While it worked, it didn’t quite work perfectly. Instead of Pete being expelled, Jay was expelled from his own body, making him a spirit temporarily.

Technically, Jay’s spirit crossed over to the afterlife in Ghosts

We know that Sam can see the ghosts because of her near-death experience. Well, technically, Jay died. His spirit crossed over to the land of the spirits. When he was put back into his own body, technically, he should be able to see the rest of the spirits.

Of course, the show set it up that Jay wouldn’t be able to see anyone afterward. We know that Pete couldn’t see the other spirits despite actually being dead. It looks like the body actually has to die for a person to be able to see the people in the afterlife.

What this episode has done is made me want Jay to be able to see the ghosts all the time. Maybe it could have even just been Pete considering Pete took over his body for so long. That’s not the way the ghostly lore works in this series, though.

Ghost Father of the Bride
“Ghost Father of the Bride” – After learning that Pete’s daughter, Laura (Holly Gauthier-Frankel), is getting married, Sam, at Pete’s behest, tries to convince her to hold her wedding at Woodstone B&B. Also, Alberta and Isaac team up to solve the mystery of what happened to Crash’s (Alex Boniello) head, on the CBS Original series GHOSTS, Thursday, April 13 (8:31-9:01 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. Will Pete have more understanding for Jay in Ghosts?

One thing Pete was able to do was see what Jay would see in the house. To Pete, the other ghosts, and Sam, the house is full. There is always someone in each room, and there are a lot of conversations that happen. Jay is never part of those conversations, although he tries to be. Pete saw just how quiet life is for Jay.

Will this lead to Pete having a little more empathy for Jay moving forward? Will we see him want to find a way to engage with Pete? Could it lead to Sas going back into Jay’s dreams to pass on some sort of message?

Ghosts returns on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS. Catch up on Paramount+.
