Isaac tells the story of what happened between him and Alexander Hamilton in Ghosts season 4, episode 14. There is much more to it than just jealousy.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 14.
As Isaac tells his story to Sam and a handful of ghosts to help Jay, Hetty, Trevor, Thor, and Alberta deal with Elias Woodstone. Oh yes, Elias is back from Hell with a one-time deal. It sounds like he’s in a bit of a MLM scheme.
Isaac’s tale of his hatred of Alexander Hamilton in Ghosts season 4, episode 14
Isaac’s story takes us back to 1776, before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Isaac had been invited to a party at John Jay’s house, and everyone is surprised to find out that Isaac is invited to this party.
While at the haberdashery to pick up the ruffle he’d ordered two weeks earlier, he learns that the ruffle is gone. Someone else has taken it. Is it really that surprising to find out that Alexander Hamilton had the exact ruffle that Isaac had reserved?
The group of men spend the night trying to draft the Declaration of Independence so that they could sign it. However, a fight with Hamilton starts, and the candle is knocked over and sets fire to the Declaration. Of course, nobody really likes Isaac. He just doesn’t fit in with this group, so they all blame him rather than Hamilton, who has gained popularity because of his ideas. I had to wonder how much this Hamilton had stolen from others. He seems like that type of guy.
Isaac was right with Hamilton stealing the ruffle. With that and being the reason Isaac was kicked out of the signing of the Declaration, it led to Isaac being blindly angry at Alexander Hamilton. That led to his chance at being an important part of history, and he can only blame himself for his obsession.
What’s funny is that all of this was told because Jay was obsessed with another local restaurant that is always busy. His restaurant started off well, but the dealings with the mafia has led to issues. Jay realizes that he needs to stop complaining and start acting, and we can all learn from that.
Isaac does get some good news at the end. His line about the “pursuit of happiness” made it into the Declaration of Independence. Pete offered that little tidbit.

Elias comes to the ghosts with an offer
After watching some trashy reality TV, because we know how great that is, Hetty, Trevor, Thor, and Alberta get a visit from Elias Woodstone. It turns out that he’s going up the manager track in Hell. It’s just a corporation, which makes a lot of sense considering what we know about corporations.
Well, Elias is one soul short on his climb up the ladder. He needs one person to offer their soul up, and he comes to the four ghosts to get one of them to agree to go with him. He promises that they will be part of management, so they’ll get to do the torturing. Why does he think any of them would ever trust him after everything he’s already done?
He’s certainly trying to sell Hell. It makes it seem a lot like an MLM.
Hetty does suggest that Thor may want to take the deal. He’s killed a lot of people, so there’s a chance that he will go to Hell when he’s “sucked off.” I do think with how much they’re all learning while being ghosts, none of them will end up going to Hell. That’s why Elias has to sell it so much.
This is something the other ghosts bring up. Trevor reminds Thor that he saved Bela’s boyfriend, Eric, and Hetty reminds him that he watched over her when she was a young girl. Thor has done a lot of good as a ghost, and if he was going to go to Hell, it would have happened by now.
With time up, Elias goes back to Hell. This isn’t the last we’ve seen of him, though. He even shows up at the very end to meet with Jay, pretending to be a publicist. Jay almost signs over his soul. Let's home someone is able to catch that if it comes up again!
And yes, Trevor, it is a good song!
This is such a great way to start my Thursday nights of TV (although it will end them when TGIT returns next week). It’s just a lot of fun, and there are some great life lessons to learn that you wouldn’t initially think would be in a comedy like this.
Ghosts airs on Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
