It's a great time to be a fan of Scott Speedman because not only has the actor recently appeared in Grey's Anatomy season 22 and Netflix's Running Point season 2, but his ABC series RJ Decker landed a renewal for a second season. The midseason entry's fate was left up until almost the last minute, but the detective comedy-drama will be back and taking High Potential's place (for now).

While we had been hoping for RJ Decker season 2 to become a reality, especially since the series as a perfect addition to ABC's lineup and deserved the renewal, the questions surrounding Speedman's availability understandably cause concern for Grey's Anatomy fans. Now that he's the leading star of his own show, will he have time to reprise his role as Nick March in season 23?

Speedman previously opened up about pulling double duty with RJ Decker and Grey's Anatomy, also sharing that he has been able to work both shows into his schedule. Considering the season 22 finale ended with a major development for Meredith and Nick, it's obvious that Speedman will have to return at some point in season 23, and showrunner Meg Marinis previewed what's next for the actor.

In the season 22 finale, Nick's injuries were tended to with emergency surgery, which had Meredith anxious and on edge. When Nick pulls through his surgery, Meredith proposes to him. She wants to marry him but doesn't need a big wedding. Meredith doesn't want to lose the person she loves, and her fear about that outweighs the fear of commitment she has been struggling with.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Marinis admitted that how quickly Meredith and Nick tie the knot in Grey's Anatomy season 23 depends on Speedman's availability with RJ Decker season 2. Since RJ Decker has been bumped up to the fall schedule after its midseason bow, the series will be filming at the same time as Grey's, making the overlap much trickier.

Marinis explained Speedman's commitment to playing Nick: "Scott loves to come back. He flew late on a Friday. He filmed with us on a Saturday. He was a trooper. Whenever we can get the two of them, absolutely. We love them. We want as much as we can of them. As for what kind of wedding? We’ll see. She is not a wedding kind of girl and he knows that. But whatever it is, it’ll be very Meredith Grey."

Still, the showrunner hasn't even decided if the wedding will take place in season 23 as the timeline of the show's upcoming events are being crafted and will be hammered out once the writers get back to work. Beyond Speedman's availability, Grey's works around Ellen Pompeo's limited screen time, as she no longer appears in every episodes of the series. Pompeo's episode count for season 23 hasn't been confirmed, and getting both stars in the same episode requires some planning.

Even if Speedman's too busy getting right to work on RJ Decker season 2 in the beginning of the fall season, Grey's Anatomy can definitely work around Nick's absence onscreen. Depending on when the season picks up, he could still be recovering from his surgery or some other professional reason that keeps him away from the show's homebase. That would make his return all the better.

We likely won't know what the next season has in store for fans until it begins rolling out, but stay tuned for more Grey's Anatomy season 23 news and updates!
