There may be some trouble in paradise for a major Grey's Anatomy couple going into season 23.
In TVLine's fall TV preview, Grey's Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis teased the fallout of Amelia's "emotional and impulsive" encounter with Cass. "I'd say the temperature is fairly chilly when we return," Marinis revealed. "While Amelia can try and make amends, it depends on whether Toni can look past it all."
As a result, it appears the couple will face major roadblocks before reconciling, if that happens at all.
Amelia and Toni have a long history. The two met years ago in medical school but didn't talk much despite Amelia's efforts to connect. After reuniting at Grey Sloan, Toni confessed that she avoided Amelia because she had a crush on her. Amelia revealed the feeling was mutual, at which point the two grew closer and entered into a relationship...of sorts.
One of "Ameloni's" biggest obstacles was Toni's relationship with her ex-wife. The two share a child and struggled to co-parent healthily in season 22. This was mostly due to Toni's ex's desire to reunite with the doctor. While Toni initially wanted to move on, she considered reuniting with her ex so that her child would have a stable home life.
During all of the uncertainty, Amelia remained patient. Obviously, she didn't like being between two exes, but she understood Toni's devotion to her family. However, Toni's decision didn't come easily or quickly.
It wasn't until the end of the season that Toni decided to commit to her relationship with Amelia. In the Season 22 finale, she went over to Amelia's house to share the good news but found something heartbreaking: Amelia with Dr. Cass Beckman. The two had slept together just before Toni arrived and were still "indisposed" when she knocked on the door.
As a result, it remains to be seen how Toni will handle her latest heartbreak.
On the one hand, it's a little unreasonable to ask someone to wait while you decide between them and your ex. It makes you seem indecisive and, at worst, fearful of commitment. Amelia was relatively understanding while Toni figured things out, so it's not surprising that she would want to move on after enough time had passed.
That said, Amelia could have told Toni about wanting to see other people. Her night with Cass seemed spur-of-the-moment; however, it still carried some big consequences.
Only time will tell if Ameloni find their way back to each other or go their separate ways in season 23.
