Grey's Anatomy season 23 is coming back this fall on ABC, but it's going to be a longer wait than we previously anticipated for the new season of the hit medical drama.
Grey's Anatomy season 23 premieres at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, after the season premieres of 911 and 911: Nashville.
The season 23 premiere is the second-latest fall premiere for the series ever. Only Grey's Anatomy season 17 premiered later in the year (Nov. 12, 2020) than season 23 will premiere, but that was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the production delays it caused when the world shut down in the spring.
ABC also revealed the premiere dates for all its fall shows on Monday, July 27. Overall, things look pretty normal, aside from the late start for its Thursday shows. It's unclear why ABC is getting started so late in the year for a few of these shows like Grey's Anatomy, 911, and 911: Nashville. They each premiere a full week after ABC's Wednesday lineup and a full month after Dancing with the Stars and RJ Decker season 2.
Honestly, this is a really interesting premiere date for Grey's Anatomy season 23, and it's definitely something to watch going forward.
Grey's Anatomy season 23 episode count has not been revealed yet
Of course, it's always good to learn the premiere dates of upcoming shows, especially a show like Grey's Anatomy. Fans can now start to pencil in plans to tune in for the season 23 premiere and new episodes every Thursday for quite a while until the holiday season.
Looking back, the late premiere date isn't that different from the season 2 premiere date, which was on Oct. 9, 2025. The key thing to watch now is, of course, the episode count for Grey's Anatomy season 23. For some reason, that information has not been released.
I'm hoping that we'll see, at least, another 18-episode season of the series just like we have for the last two seasons. With the late premiere date, there's obviously a little fear among the fanbase that we'll see a reduced episode count for the upcoming season. Hopefully, that doesn't happen.
Production on Grey's Anatomy season 23 just started on Friday, July 24, with most of the cast gathering for a photo that was shared on the official Grey's Anatomy Instagram. Ellen Pompeo is, of course, not in the picture, which you can see below.
Most fans know by now, but Kevin McKidd, who played Dr. Owen Hunt, and Kim Raver, who played Dr. Teddy Altman, are not returning for season 23, so they obviously are not in the picture.
