Grey’s Anatomy has done a lot of “experimental” episodes over its epic 22-season run. We’ve had episodes of characters in a coma, interactions with ghosts, an alternate reality, and more. However, no episode is as offbeat as “Song Beneath the Song," also known as the “Grey’s Anatomy: The Musical Event.”

The 18th episode of Grey's Anatomy season 7, “Song,” had Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) caught in a nasty car accident just as Arizona was proposing. As the pair are treated at the hospital and drift in and out of consciousness, both imagine the characters breaking out into song. That takes them on a journey back to each other.

The episode was crafted as a showcase for Ramirez, who was a Tony Award-winning Broadway star and showed her pipes off well. The other cast members did their best to handle the numbers, despite some being better than others.

The episode remains divisive to this day, with some fans loving how fun it was while others found it completely unsuited for the show to turn into a musical. It retains a legacy that lasts 15 years later.

At the Disney Upfronts in May, TV Line’s Andy Swift talked to Greys’ Anatomy stars Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd), James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber), Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson), Chris Carmack (Link Lincoln) and James Winston George (Ben Warren) about the season 22 finale and season 23 plans.

Swift brought up the anniversary of the musical episode and whether the cast would do another. Pickens, the only cast member around for that episode, immediately said, "No." Notably, Webber never sang in that episode, and Pickens has been upfront in discussing how complex it was to film.

Scorsone joked that they’d do it if Swift joined in. Luddington then asked, "Do we get autotuned?” Pickens immediately added, "Yeah, if we get autotuned,” with Luddington confirming, "If we get autotuned, I’m in.”

Swift pressed Carmack on what song Link would sing with Luddington suggesting an original tune. Carmack mused, “You know, I’ll have to give that some thought. This is the first time I’ve ever been asked that question.”

Swift suggested a country song, and Carmack agreed. “Yeah, we could do a country hit. These boots were made for walking.” Luddington “loved it” as Carmack added, “these scrubs were made for…”

It might be interesting for Grey’s to try another musical, given the new cast members and the changes in musical tastes and genres over the last decade and a half. It can mix some modern songs with a couple of originals and even a mix of various genres. It would be a daring experiment, but Grey’s Anatomy has pulled those off before, so maybe it’s time for another song-packed showcase for the cast.

Grey’s Anatomy season 22 is now streaming.
