Grey's Anatomy season 21, episode 3 recap and review: "I Can See Clearly Now"
Catherine Fox did not want Webber to know about her medical issues. Well, that became impossible to hide in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 3.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 3.
The cat is out of the bag, and I’m so happy for that. It didn’t take long for Webber to learn about Catherine’s health issues, but something had to happen before that was the case. Of course, Webber took it the way you’d think, and I’m now annoyed with him.
Meanwhile, Nick performed a game-changing surgery, Simone and Lucas struggled to see eye to eye, and Amelia is starting to become very much like her brother.
Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 3 included Webber’s wrath
The episode started with focus on Catherine’s biopsy. Meredith finally had to tell Nick what was going on, which did mean breaking HIPPA. After all, Nick is not part of Catherine’s care team. And this is what gets me with the ending to this episode. Meredith cannot tell someone Catherine doesn’t want to know because of HIPPA!
Anyway, Nick is somewhat happy to be let into Meredith’s life, although it is on a situation that involves Catherine and lying. He understands why Meredith has to do this, so he pulls Webber into the game-changing surgery.
What is Nick’s surgery? Only a kidney transplant without the use of general anesthetic. The patient was completely awake the whole time, and that did bring its own complications. That guy was not the best patient for something like this, but it all went smoothly in the end. There was a moment where they feared there was a missing pad, but it was under Nick’s shoe the whole time. I’ll get into what I hated about this soon, but overall, I love that Nick got to show off his skills as a transplant surgeon and there is hope for the future of transplant surgeries.
During the surgery, Nick has to be honest with Webber. Webber gets a 911 text from Meredith, and at first, Webber isn’t going to go—Simone doesn’t tell him that it’s a 911 text! It’s up to Nick to tell Webber that his wife is the reason Meredith is texting him.
What was supposed to be a simply biopsy for Meredith and Bailey turned into something more serious. Catherine collapsed and needed other work, and that’s why Meredith got to a point she had to tell Webber. He managed to remain calm during the emergency, but by the end of the episode, he shared how angry he was. Of course, it was all Meredith’s fault.
Well, it wasn’t. As a doctor, Webber knew that Meredith wouldn’t have been allowed to say anything without Catherine’s say so. The only reason she did get away with it at that point was because Catherine could die. They needed her next of kin, and that’s who Webber was. Webber was so condescending in this moment. I get he was scared, but he needs to apologize. Catherine is to blame.
Simone shows who she really is when it comes to Lucas
I always say that when someone shows you who they really are to believe them. I wish I could scream that to Lucas. When Nick wanted Lucas on his service to help with the game-changing transplant, Simone was jealous. She didn’t see why Lucas should get that opportunity, and immediately put the blame on him being a Shepherd.
At no point has Lucas used his name. The man is having to repeat his first year. He’s not getting special treatment. It’s just that Nick is a great doctor who can teach Lucas and saw that Lucas needed the extra help.
Simone really got to me when she started making digs in the OR—she was on Webber’s service, which was why she was able to get in on the surgery after all. She undermined Lucas and she undermined Nick in a way. Yet she wasn’t reprimanded once for her words, and even Lucas wasn’t mad in the end.
Their relationship seems so one-sided, it’s ridiculous. Simone wouldn’t make a good partner. She reminds me a lot of Maggie right now, and that means career driven. I don’t have a problem with that, but admit that that’s who you are. It’s not a flaw as long as you don’t drag people down or hold them back because of your personality.
Amelia ends up with a near-impossible surgery in Grey’s Anatomy
While all that happened, Amelia was called in for a consult. A patient had a tumor on her spine. Amelia took a look and would work on it, but she had one condition. The patient needed to get an abortion.
This patient was 20 weeks pregnant by this point. I understand that it would be a dangerous surgery and I am fully pro-choice, but that’s the important thing. I’m pro-CHOICE. The patient should have the choice, and Amelia shouldn’t have started like all the rest saying that she would only operate if did something she didn’t want to do. Why did it take a heartfelt story for Amelia to realize that this patient was willing to risk her life for the baby, but wanted to know if there was another option?
Amelia shared why the patient couldn’t wait a few weeks, and this patient made it clear that she would continue with the pregnancy. Now it came down to whether Amelia was going to give up on her, and at first, she was going to.
The surgery was a success, but it was touch and go. Amelia and Jo got into an argument in the OR room, and it led to Mika yelling at the two of them. Was it out of line? At that point, I don’t believe it was. Mika was made to feel bad for telling them to start treating their patient like a human. If she was really that out of line, Teddy would have said something.
I sometimes wonder what is going on with the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial. In the past, we would have seen doctors attempt the impossible and continue to treat the patients like they’re human in the OR. Where did that go?
It has opened a new door for Amelia, though. Teddy came to her with a list of patients who want to see Amelia. They have tumors that are considered inoperable or dangerous to remove, and they want to see if Amelia can do it. This is something Derek fought hard to achieve, and now Amelia has the chance to do it too.
There was a reason for Mika’s outburst, though. She is dealing with a lot right now, and she’s seeing how the doctors are treating patients. Soon enough, her youngest sister is going to be one of their patients, as she as rectal cancer. I guess this is the big story that is going to write Mika out of the series, and the show is already backtracking on her romance with Jules because of this.
Bailey got her job back
Catherine finally admitted that she was wrong. After the success of the biopsy happening—results aren’t back yet—Catherine admits that she shouldn’t have fired Bailey. This is as close to an apology as Bailey is getting, and she manages to get her job back.
That’s going to make the interns happy. Sydney continues to be the world’s most annoying doctor, but she does make some good choices. After calling Ben out on his career-hopping—and haven’t we all joked about that, so I was glad that came up—Ben shared exactly how he fits in as a resident. He is patient, and he can solve problems. His firefighting training has given him everything he needs, and this passion is certainly something that helps Sydney rethink her initial decision not to hire Ben.
When Bailey goes to what is back to being her office, Sydney is packing up her things. There doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings as Sydney tells Bailey that she’s hired Ben. She can see the good in him, and she knows that the interns could do with someone like him. There’s a genuine thank you from Bailey, but the moment of respect between the two is gone as Sydney goes back to being her bubbly self.
Is that the last we’ve seen of Sydney? I’m not entirely sure, but I’d say so. Bailey is back where she belongs!
The ending also gives us a hint that another Station 19 character could be back. Jo initially wanted to go to an outside OB-GYN for her pregnancy, but by the end of the episode, she changes her mind. She wants DeLuca to be her OB-GYN. We all know DeLuca makes a great choice, and she does respect privacy. I don’t know why Jo would worry about that.
