Heading into Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 14, “Wrecking Ball,” we anticipated that the episode would bring the end of one character’s time on the show. What we did not expect was that the episode would feature two departures. Let’s start with the exit that was expected and left us absolutely wrecked.
After taking Katie to their home to make her comfortable with end-of-life care, it becomes apparent that she truly does not have much time. With time running out, Lucas asks Simone to help get Katie’s mom out of the house so that he can help her with a final request. Once it’s just her and Lucas, Katie asks him to burn her journals, which contain the detailed recollections of all the major events from her life, including fights with her mother, details about her love life, and more.
As they speak, she asks him if they’re ever going to talk about the elephant in the room: his feelings for her. He spirals as he asks her what she wants to hear. How he has feelings for her? Or maybe how if she weren’t sick, they’d be together? He breaks down as he tells her he’s trying to keep it together to take care of her like he promised and like she deserves.
The pair lie in bed together and ponder what could have been had they met when they were younger. He comes up with a story about how he was at the library, and she offered to help him check out a book he was looking to borrow but could not without a library card. They then spend the whole week together walking around the city, talking about books. Katie asks about where they are today, and he explains that they’re in New York; she has her own therapy practice, and he’s doing a fellowship.
Later, Katie isn’t able to breathe, and Lucas runs into the kitchen to get the supplies to try to drain some of the fluid building in her body, but Simone has hidden the supplies. She tells him they need to make her comfortable and give her morphine, but he can’t give up and races out to go to the hospital to get the supplies he needs.
Sadly, when he returns to the house, Katie has passed away. What makes the moment even more heartbreaking is that Lucas wasn’t there when Katie took her final breaths, something we know is going to stay with him in the episodes ahead. He’s got a lot to process, including his grief, feelings of guilt, and the anger he displays towards Simone, who he blames for not being there when Katie died due to her hiding the supplies.

Kavita has left Seattle and moved to Boston
The other big exit that came in the episode was one that was a bit unexpected, yet also expected in a weird way.
As fans will recall, episode 13 ended with Blue breaking up with Kavita after finding out she lied and was willing to sabotage Jules' career just to get a leg up in her own. When Kavita asked Blue if he had told Wright about her lying about being the one who was responsible for stitching the man’s flap right over the blood supply, Blue made it clear he had not but only because he wanted to give her the chance to do the right thing first.
Well, it seems that Kavita came clean to Wright about her role in the botched surgery and cleared Jules' name. She also took the job in Boston, it seems, as we learn at the top of the episode that she has left Seattle.
"I need my charger back. Kavita took my other one with her to Boston," Blue told Jules as the pair walked together preparing for rounds. "She’s taking a leave of absence. She told Wright that she placed the stitch, not you."
With Kavita having moved to Boston, it's clear she's taken the job opportunity that came her way and has left Seattle behind to get a fresh start. ABC has not confirmed whether we'll see Anita Kalathara make any additional appearances this season, but it's looking like episode 13 was her final episode on the show. There's really no point in bringing Kavita back into the fold, as her storyline has come to a natural conclusion, and Kalathara is not credited for appearing in any additional episodes this season, indicating we've seen the last of the character for now.
