Grey’s Anatomy had plenty of twists in the season 22 finale, but one caught even a key cast member off guard!

The main arc of the finale was a huge bridge collapse, flooding the hospital with patients. Despite being fired, Kwan pitched in to help, as did a returning Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush). Nick (Scott Speedman) was among the injured, which had Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) worried.

In the end, things seemed to work out. Nick recovered, and Meredith proposed to him, which he accepted. Owen and Teddy decided to live happily ever after, moving to Paris. Kwan, sadly, was still fired while Jules and Winston were moving ahead, as were Simone and Wes. Bailey decided to pursue a master’s degree, while Jo wrestled with continuing as a doctor, and Link faced some painful problems.

However, a major surprise was when Toni dropped by Amelia’s apartment to say she loved her and was willing to leave her family for her. At which point, the door widened to show Cass in Amelia’s bed, with a heartbroken Toni walking off.

It was out of nowhere for many viewers, and speaking to TV Line, Sophia Bush acknowledged it was just as jarring to the actors.

"Every time I get a script, I'm wondering where the big gotcha moment is going to be, and let me tell you, I truly did not see it coming for myself. Like, I flipped to the page and [screamed]. I'm immediately texting Kim [Raver] and Caterina [Scorsone]. We all wound up in this storyline together, so I was like, 'You guys, did anyone know?' It was nuts. I'm sure you were just as surprised as I was.”

Bush admitted that, like viewers, she was trying to figure out just when Amelia and Cass connected enough to have this fling, figuring it had to be off-screen when they were talking about Nick’s surgery. However, she thinks the surprise is what made the moment so effective.

"I think it made the cliffhanger such a good moment, because if you'd seen us at the bar, you would have been like, 'Oh, this is what's happening now.’”

So that’s a great twist, but what does it mean for the future?

Are Amelia and Cass continuing as a couple?

Even for Grey’s Anatomy, Amelia sure had rotten timing to hook up with a married co-worker just as Toni was ready to move to the next step. Everyone is asking the same big question about this storyline. Does Cass just see this as another fling in her open marriage or something more serious, especially given that her on-screen husband, David Beckman, has barely appeared?

It appears we have some kind of answer via the interview:

"The way the writers explained it to me was that they've been together for a long time, and they love each other, but they're not sure they're in love anymore. They want to maintain their family, but they also want to make space for curiosity and desire and exploration, and they do that in a way that's healthy and safe and communicated. We just haven't spent a lot of time with David on the show, so I really have no idea what their dynamic is. ... And I don't know if this will eventually lead to Cass wanting a home life that looks different than the one that she has. We haven't gotten quite that far. But I do think it's a really interesting question."

Bush is only listed as a guest star, so her appearances may be limited in Grey's Anatomy season 23, which is expected to premiere this fall.

Amelia and Toni may be the end goal, and it's hardly the first time a Grey’s Anatomy romance has been hit by the speed bump of a surprise hookup. Still, it was yet another wild turn in the season 22 finale that makes the wait for next year bigger.

You can watch the Grey's Anatomy season 22 finale on Hulu right now before the full season hits Netflix soon. Stay tuned for more news about the hit series.
