Casting has not yet begun on ABC’s new Texas-based Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, but it seems there is one former cast member who is making their interest known in joining the new offshoot.
Days after word broke that ABC had given a green light to a new Grey’s Anatomy Texas spinoff, former Grey’s star Leven Rambin took to social media to make it known that she would love nothing more than to be part of the new spinoff.
"Now, hold on just a minute. Grey's Anatomy Texas spinoff? Are you kidding me? They were going to try to do a Texas spinoff and not tell me about it? Nope. No, no, no. Mmm, mm,” Rambin commented in a video shared to Instagram on May 20. “Shonda, I'm literally in Texas right now," she said. "This needs to happen. This is perfect. We've been manifesting this. I think I've manifested a little too close to the sun and got Grey's Anatomy to come to me.”
It’s been 16 years since Rambin last appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, having made several guest appearances across the show’s sixth season after debuting late in season 5 as Sloan Riley, the estranged daughter of Dr. Mark Sloan. She last appeared in season 6, episode 20, “Hook, Line and Sinner,” which was the culmination of her guest arc with Sloan giving birth and then following through with her adoption plans by giving the baby up.
We know that ABC wants the new spinoff to have some connections to the flagship series, so it would make sense to bring in some familiar faces from the past. Sloan is not likely to be at the top of many fans’ wishlists of characters to bring back for the Texas-based spinoff, but it would be an intriguing and fun path for the show to explore.
Bringing Sloan into the mix would give the spinoff a fun legacy character with a connection to an even bigger character within the franchise. It would be fun to see what Sloan has been up to after all these years and to see that she followed in her late father’s footsteps in becoming a doctor at the Texas hospital at the heart of the spinoff.
The nice thing about Sloan would be that while she is a character who already exists in the Grey’s world, she’s a clean slate in a sense. While we know a bit about Sloan from her five-episode arc, there is so much untapped potential for the character and the show to explore how her past shaped her. It would also be a fun way to see the franchise continue through a new generation.
We know ABC wants some familiar faces in the mix, but how many that ends up being and who they tap to bring in from the flagship show to tie it back to Grey's. With the spinoff set to arrive in 2027, we should start to see casting news coming out of ABC in the months ahead as they work to build the ensemble for the series.
