Grey’s Anatomy fans are aware of the roller coaster romance history of Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone). As a bisexual, Amelia has enjoyed relationships with men and women over the show’s run, with some deeper than others. Her latest is Toni Wright (Jennifer Landon), a visiting plastic surgeon.
The pair had a history of a near romance when they were both attending Harvard. They were soon a regular couple with hookups, even as Toni seemed a bit hung up about her ex-wife Celine and raising a son. The finale had Toni telling Amelia that Celine wanted to get back together, and she was tempted to go with it.
The final scenes showed Toni showing up at Amelia’s door to pour her heart out on how it was Amelia she wanted, not Celine, and to be with her. At which point, Toni saw that fellow doctor Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush) was half-clothed on Amelia’s couch, and it was obvious what had happened, sending her storming off.
At the Disney Upfronts on May 12, TVLine talked to several cast members about the twist, with Scorsone herself gushing about being as surprised as anyone at the Amelia/Cass hookup.
"I mean, I feel thrilled for the gay internet. I think it was something that people were waiting for, and they got it. But it was definitely a table read moment where I turned the page and was like [gasp]. That's what we do on 'Grey's Anatomy.'"
Bush had already discussed her own surprise at the unexpected romance. So is this a new couple or are Amelia and Tony still the endgame?

A big reason the Amelia/Cass pairing was a surprise was that the pair had spent barely any time on-screen together, aside from an emergency surgery. It may be that season 23 includes flashbacks to just how they fell into bed together.
Whether this is serious or not is a question. Cass is established as having an “open marriage” and may see this as just a fling. Amelia could be hurt by Toni’s seeming rejection and is now guilty over cheating on her when Toni wanted to take a big step. Yet Scorsone and Bush already have good chemistry that could make this romance more permanent.
In the same interview, Camilla Luddington said that it was difficult to choose sides in this romance. “That's hard! I've got to see how it plays out next season."
“We root for all of them,” James Pickens Jr. added.
Grey’s is no stranger to strange love triangles, so we’ll see how it develops when season 23 arrives this fall on ABC!
