If there is one thing that Grey’s Anatomy has taught fans over the years, it’s to always expect the season to end with more than a few cliffhangers. Unlike many shows, Grey’s Anatomy has never been afraid of going big with its season finale events, throwing just about everything humanly possible in the direction of the Grey Sloan doctors.
This isn’t a trend the show is looking to end anytime soon, as it seems season 22 will be ending with more than a few cliffhangers.
"It's not even just one cliffhanger. There's just so many cliffhangers in the finale. Like even as an actor, it's frustrating. I'm like, 'Can I get this script for next season? Can I get the premiere?'" Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington teased of the final episode of the season in a recent interview with PEOPLE.
Luddington was unable to provide any spoilers as to what those cliffhangers might be, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they entailed life-or-death circumstances, left us questioning certain characters’ futures, and included at least a few romantic storylines! After all, season 22 will be signing off with yet another disaster striking.
In the penultimate episode of the season, we’ll learn that a bridge collapses in the area, and this bridge collapse will hit close to home for the Grey Sloan team. The season finale will then see Grey Sloan in full disaster response mode when dozens of victims are routed to the hospital for treatment. Among those rushed to Grey Sloan will be one of their own, and it seems there are two key candidates for who this might be: Owen and Nick.
The promo for the final episodes saw Nick being brought in via ambulance as Meredith came to Bailey for help. Bailey initially seems to turn Meredith away until she reveals the reason she’s needed in OR 2 is that Nick has been injured. We also see Owen involved in the bridge collapse, learning that he takes the bridge to work as we cut to a shot of him unconscious in his car, which is slowly becoming submerged in water following the bridge collapse.
Knowing that Kevin McKidd is set to exit the show as a series regular, the promo certainly has fans worried that Owen could join a long list of Grey's Anatomy characters to be killed off as part of an exit storyline. We've seen that the show is not afraid of killing off main characters and knowing that Owen could be in danger following the bridge collapse certain gives fans a reason to be worried.
Owen and Nick aren't the only one's whose futures could be on the line in the final episodes and play into the cliffhangers teased by Luddington.
Bailey and Blue's careers are both on the line after Blue gave a patient a trial treatment without approval from the FDA and Bailey helped him cover his tracks after finding out the truth. It's quite possible they could be involved in one of the many cliffhangers coming our way in the finale.
As for what else the show might throw our way in the final episode of the season? There's truly no telling what the writers have cooked up, but it seems we might be ending the season with more questions than answers. Thankfully, Grey's Anatomy has been renewed and will be returning in the fall!
