Matlock is taking another break for a few weeks but will be back for the last episodes of its first season!
Matlock has been one of the bigger surprise hits for CBS. The promos pushed the idea of Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Oscar winner Kathy Bates) joining the law firm of Jacobson & Moore for a new start in life and using her age and wits to succeed.
The pilot ended with a fantastic twist that put the series in a new direction. Matty is actually a rich woman living with her husband and young grandson in a fancy manor. Her daughter died of an opioid overdose, and Matty suspects someone at the Jacobson & Moore law firm buried documents that could have gotten those drugs off the street. Thus, Matty is really going undercover to find out who did it and expose them.
The series has been a huge hit, earning a fast second-season renewal. It has had a couple of minor breaks, with one more coming this week.
When does Matlock return?
Matlock will be off on both Thursday, March 20 and Thursday, March 27. The reason can be blamed on what’s become an annual CBS tradition: March Madness.
The last two weeks of March have CBS dominated by coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. With 64 teams going at it, the first rounds are packed with games so Thursday and Friday night shows will be preempted by coverage of the games.
This means Matlock won’t return until Thursday, April 3. That may include one more break, but that just leads to the big finale!
What’s coming when Matlock returns?
The last few episodes of Matlock have continued Matty’s investigation, complicated by a visit from her sister Bitsy (Julie Hagerty), who’s thrown to discover Matty’s plans. The last episode, “Game Face,” ended with Matty discovering the secret source inside the law firm tipping her off is file clerk Mrs. Belvin (Patricia Belcher).
The next episode, “The Johnson Case,” puts a spotlight on Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) handling a murder case as she still vies to make partner at the firm.
“Olympia tries to impress the partnership board by taking on a complicated murder case.”
That may sound like a standard plotline, but Matlock viewers know that no case is what it seems. The show seems set to then take a break on Thursday, April 10 before wrapping up its first season with a two-part finale on Thursday, April 17.
So enjoy the brief break for Matlock before its grand return that sets up its first season finale and expect more twists to come on this surprise hit!
