Debra Palmer makes a surprise visit to the firm

The episode immediately begins with Matty and Edwin breaking the news to Alfie that Joey might be on drugs and that he admitted that he knew of Alfie's existence since before he was born. Obviously, he's hurt over the revelation. Matty's acting differently and still talking to the AI Ellie. Olympia and Julian interrupt her latest chat with a discovery about that leads to Debra Palmer.

Meanwhile, Alfie worries that Joey could be dead since no one has seen or heard from him in days. Back at the office, Olympia's still trying to make strides with Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah asks for another day to mull over the job offer. In the midst of everything going on, the team takes on a case from Olympia's former student that involves the hit and run that killed his father.

In court, Olympia fights for her client even though she is on thin ice with the veracity of this case. Matty and Olympia celebrate that they have a meeting set up with Debra Palmer, but when they get off the elevator back at the office, they discover that she's in the lobby and hurry away before she can spot them. Clearly, something raised the alarm bells for Debra to pay Senior a visit.

Julian's tasked with finding out what Debra's doing at the firm, which leads to her explaining it's for a tax issue (Edwin's fake voicemail) for her company Eternal Glamour. She figured her angel investor could help out. Julian offers to provide his assistance given Senior's state but also probably to steer this ship. He calls Edwin to set up another meeting and parameters for looking at her files.

Hunter and Sarah talk about Sarah's decision about her job, and she explains her pro/con list. Turns out, Hunter already knows her pretty well. Matty connects with Shae over coffee to set up a lunch together, mostly to get her out of the office when Edwin's there. Matty and Hunter visit a tattoo shop for the case. During the visit, Matty receives a call from Joey and he asks to meet her in person.

The team pulls off a heist for Debra's records, and someone gets caught

Matty and Edwin don't agree about letting Joey back in, but Matty doesn't want to history to repeat itself given her guilt about Ellie. During a meeting for the murder case, their client gets aggressive and lashes out, creating a real scene and problem. Matty and Edwin talk with Joey, who admits to his relapse. He wants to make amends for his lie. Edwin is furious, especially when Joey mentions rights.

Alfie catches Matty talking the AI Ellie, which presents another problem for their family. Matty won't allow Alfie to speak with the AI, and Edwin realizes she's addicted to using the technology and using it as an emotional crutch. Matty makes a revelation at the tattoo shop that blows their case wide open. The truth comes out about what happened to Travis' father, but it doesn't bring him peace.

Olympia catches Matty talking to the AI Ellie this time, and she explains that knowing this version of Ellie won't use makes her feel better. Olympia worries that using the AI platform this often isn't healthy. Matty wants to know if Ellie blames her, but she also doesn't want to say goodbye again. It's time for Edwin's arrival at the firm for Debra's fake tax audit.

Julian and "Arthur" argue, which prompts Debra to pull Julian out of the room and give Edwin time to take Debra's records. They appear to be homefree, but Julian worries when he spots Shae back at the office early. But he lost track of Debra, creating a panic about a possible run-in with Matty. It's a close call, but no one gets caught. Well, not so fast! Shae happens to spot Edwin.

Matty approaches Shae, who knows that she recognizes Edwin. Calmly but firmly and dropping her accent, Matty asks Shae not to ask more questions because she doesn't want to lie. Shae decides that because Matty showed up for her, she will show up for Matty. Just like that, it's swept under the rug. After talking to Travis, Matty believes that Edwin might be facing PTSD from losing Ellie.

Sarah plays dodgeball with Hunter's team to let out her nervous energy to help make her decision. She comes to Olympia and tells her that she will take the full two weeks until the merger to make her choice. Olympia agrees that she's worth the wait. Edwin apologizes to Joey, who apologizes to Alfie. Matty got the catbird tattoo and says goodbye to AI Ellie. The team finds the proof they needed that ties Senior to the hush money. Finally, they get a win leading into the season finale.

The Matlock season 2 finale airs Thursday, April 23 at 9/8c on CBS, also streaming on Paramount+.
