Since Matlock first premiered on CBS, it's all come down to this moment. Matty took a job at Jacobson Moore under a false name in order to get justice for her daughter. After many bumps along the way, she finally ends the Wellbrexa cover-up case along with her teammates Olympia and Julian in the two-part Matlock season 2 finale. But how do they stick it to Senior at long last?

Before the Matlock season 2 finale, the exact synopsis of episode 15 and episode 16 were kept close to the vest, but we received confirmation that we're getting the closure we've been waiting for. In last week's episode, Matty and Olympia navigated a tricky situation in the office while Debra Palmer was in the office visiting Senior, but the team received crucial information from her that implicates Senior.

Now that Matty has also arrived at a place of closure with Ellie, officially shutting the door on using the AI platform to talk to her, it's all systems go to bring down Senior and put the Wellbrexa case to bed. But surely, it can't be that simple, right? Let's find out with a recap of Matlock season 2 episode 15 and episode 16, the epic season finale, and see how it teases season 3!

Matlock season 2 episode 15 recap

The first episode of the two-part finale begins with Matty riding a bus a night and being asked by the woman beside her if she knows her. When she looks around, she sees her face on the front page of a tabloid newspaper, revealing her double life. She's swarmed by cameras and reporters when she steps off the bus and enters a car and races home. She's going viral and Gwen Easton is in her room to cut her bar card, but thankfully, it's all just a horrible nightmare.

Julian and Olympia prepare for what how they will explain the situation to their children, especially Julian's role in the situation. Matty found the perfect person at the DOJ to share their story with, but when the trio exits the elevator, the firm's deep into merger preparations. In order for Sarah to keep her job after the merger, Matty and Olympia need to convince her to choose Olympia over Julian (since he will likely be disbarred). Sarah learns that she's actually 30 due to an adoption mix-up.

In the midst of the merger and the ongoing race to take down Senior, the team takes on a new case that includes guest star Bridget Regan as a dueling lawyer on the other side. After the case begins, Matty meets with "the hedgehog," Lida Guitierrez (Gina Rodriguez), in a diner. She breaks down the case, and Lida reveals that her brother died from an overdose, which Matty knew. Lida's hesitant to accept given the risks, but Matty persuades her to at least entertain taking the case.

Back at home, Matty reflects on being unable to reveal her real name to Lida and thinks about when happens when it all ends—the media attention and everything that comes with it. Back at the firm, Eva drops by to give Olympia some skincare but also to chat about Senior's next move. Matty wants appear in court for the case because it could be her last time, but Olympia's insistent that she will fight for her and even open their own firm together. They are a united front.

Gina Rodriguez reveals the truth about Senior and what he knew

Julian meets with Senior before Eva can get to him, but she interrupts their lunch to find out why he's retiring in the middle of the merger. He's not about to give her any information, though. After his lunch, Julian meets with Sarah and she shares that she wants to join his team. He pushes her to choose Olympia even though she feels she will never be as close to Olympia as Matty. He lies that he's thinking about leaving the firm, which only sways her to still join him. He pushes harder.

Sarah's at least still looking forward to being on Olympia's team to work alongside Matty, whose friendship and guidance she has appreciated in the past year. Back in court, the case has taken a nosedive and looks to favor the prosecution. Meanwhile, Eva corners Senior and threatens him to talk to her without Julian or she will blow up the merger. Lida meets with Julian per Matty's recommendation and he convinces her that he won't bail on the case.

Matty, Edwin, and Alfie share the truth with Joey and he worries what would happen if Matty and Edwin get arrested for breaking laws. Suddenly, they're talking about Joey being Alfie's guardian, but he only agreed to Alfie's request to not let him down. There's still a lot of decisions to be made and what ifs to see through. At the firm, Sarah overhears Olympia talking about her future firm with Matty. Eva confronts Olympia about Senior's mental state, but she understands that situation now.

Later, Olympia pitches to Matty that she shouldn't come forward and allow the DOJ to revolve around Julian's testimony. In that case, she would be able to stay Matty Matlock. When she presents the idea to Edwin, he's not totally on board. He wants to exist, which he does not in Matty Matlock's life. She seems to agree with Edwin. Sarah approaches Matty about "Lawrence and Kingston," but Matty refuses to reveal who Kingston is and loses Sarah's trust.

The worse news is that Lida breaks the truth to Julian that Senior has been onto them the entire time. He doesn't have dementia and has been one step ahead of them. When the trio looks through the files, they find the Wellbrexa back in discovery, which means there's technically no crime anymore. What will they do now in order to take him down?

Matlock season 2 episode 16 recap

Even with their backs against the wall, Matty is determined to not let Senior win. They have four days to "cobble" together a case and she's using herself talking to the media as a failsafe. The trio piece together the timeline of the case in order to rebuild theirs. Olympia and Julian are focusing on the money trail while Matty looks into finding someone else to testify. In the elevator at the firm, Matty apologizes to Sarah, but she's already hardened her perspective on her career.

Matty drops by Emmalyn a.k.a. Mrs. B's dog grooming van, but she's not met with a warm welcome. Emmalyn slams the door in her face and her male friend Hank forbids Matty from talking to her. Despite her attempts, she makes no progress. Olympia made progress on connecting The Wolf to Senior's handoff, a great step forward. The team also makes a break in their other case. After work, Matty and Olympia discover that all of the partners in charge knew about the cover-up.

Olympia suggests reading Eva into the case, but they have had a lot of wine and everything sounds like a good idea, including Olympia leaving Langston a message. She and Matty are drunk and giggly, which is a nice change of pace given all of their stress. The morning after, Matty's a little worse for the wear, but Edwin realizes that Matty laughs with Olympia the way she did with Ellie. He's opened up to the idea of her staying Matty Matlock and practicing law with Olympia. But he's not staying dead.

Julian keeps Senior occupied with a champagne celebration, but The Wolf interrupts with a confession... but not that confession. Meanwhile, Olympia meets with Eva to read her in on the truth about Senior faking his dementia and the whole Wellbrexa scheme. Olympia asks Eva for help obtaining footage that will help make their case. When Eva orders a Tom Collins with extra cherries, Olympia has a realization that stops her in her tracks.

Olympia attempts to pull the file away from Eva, but when Eva opens, her drink order is circled on the receipt. Now they both know. Eva found out about Olympia when she met with Senior privately. She found herself in a situation back then that implicated her. Eva asks Olympia not to go to the DOJ and let guilt take its course with Senior. She seems to see this as a way to take over the firm, but she won't rat Olympia out or help her, so Olympia's left with a decision to make.

Matty tries again with Emmalyn and has better luck this time. They clear the air with an emotional conversation, which gives Matty pause about bringing up Hank. She couldn't pull the trigger on asking her to testify. Matty has reached a point where she's ready to lay down the sword to stop the fight to find another way to get justice. She believes now that Ellie led Matty to the firm, and more specifically to Olympia. She's found possibility and a future.

Julian's surprised that they have taken a turn on the case. Once they open themselves up to surrending on the war, they instantly seem lighter, especially Matty now that she's released her anger and knows the aftershocks wouldn't be worth it.
