Matthew Gray Gubler to return to Criminal Minds: Evolution (But there's a twist!)
Criminal Minds fans, get ready to see a familiar face when the show returns for the upcoming season of the revival of the hit show. However, there is a twist to the return of Matthew Gray Gubler as Dr. Spencer Reid.
Ever since Criminal Minds: Evolution premiered, fans have wondered when we will see Spencer Reid rejoining the team. Along with Daniel Henney’s Matt Simmons, the two were said to still be with the FBI, but on assignment elsewhere.
It has always been teased by showrunner Erica Messer that scheduling conflicts kept them from the show. But they were always welcome to come back permitting they did not have other projects that kept them busy.
Dr. Spencer Reid will return to Criminal Minds
Now it has officially been confirmed that Gubler will make a return to the show he starred on for 15 seasons. However, there is a catch. His appearance will only be brief for one episode. Currently, Gubler is in the midst of preparing for a new role on CBS’s new series Einstein, where he will play the great-grandson of the well-known physicist.
While it looks like he will only appear for one episode, it will still be great to see him appear for a short time. Whether or not we learn more about what Reid has been up to, it will still be a treat to see the popular character back in action.
Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution ended with the series antagonist Elias Voit being attacked in the prison laundry room where he was being housed. Whether this was a plot to try to get out of prison is up in the air since Voit is notorious for being one step ahead of the team.
We’re looking forward to seeing how Reid makes his appearance. At the time of this writing, it is unknown whether we will eventually see Simmons return to the BAU for the new season as well.
Henney has been busy on his own series The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime. We will still keep an eye out to see if he will return as well to Criminal Minds in future installments.
Season 3 of the series is still under wraps, but we do know a new character will also arrive in the form of Dr. Julia Ochoa. Played by Aimee Garcia, she will be connected to a patient who suffered a brain injury. This could turn out to be Voit himself, especially since Ochoa will have scenes with Adam Rodriguez’s Luke Alves.
