NBC shakes up Law & Order franchise with one cancellation, one renewal

NBC Universal has made a major decision on both Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime and at least one is great!

It’s good news/bad news for Law & Order fans as NBCUniversal has made a major decision on two of the franchise’s installments!

Let’s get the good news out of the way first. Per Deadline, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will continue its record run as NBC renewed the series for a 28th season. As it turns out, NBC actually picked up the show for two more seasons in 2025 and is only now revealing the “hidden” second-year renewal. This makes SVU the longest-running primetime drama on broadcast TV. It also puts Mariska Hargitay in the record books as the longest-running female star of a primetime series with her 28th year as Olivia Benson.

Per Deadline, the series has actually seen improvement as season 27 is 27% higher in Peacock viewership compared to last year. It’s also NBC’s #1 drama among the 18-49 adults demo in multi-platform viewing. Plus, the show is able to keep its budget low and, combined with the excellent syndication deals, made its renewal a safe bet.

There’s no word on any cast changes, and Michele Fazekas is expected to be back as showrunner. As for the main Law & Order series, it seems that’s still “on the bubble” but has a better chance for a new season than other NBC shows such as Brilliant Minds and The Hunting Party.

So that’s great news for SVU fans, but there’s a downside as well.

Law & Order: Organized Crime canceled

The news of SVU’s renewal comes just hours after it was announced that Peacock has canceled the Law & Order: Organized Crime spinoff. The series was always an outlier among the other shows, as, rather than episodic, it was more of a serialized drama with season-long plotlines.

Christopher Meloni reprised his SVU role as Detective Elliot Stabler, now working with a special unit tackling criminal organizations. After four seasons on NBC, the series moved to Peacock for season 5, promising a grittier production. That season would get a showcase on NBC. It looks like the viewing numbers couldn’t justify NBC continuing the show.

It wasn’t helped that the show had major creative issues with no less than six showrunners in its five-season span. NBC’s new wave of pilots for the 2026-27 season made it less likely Organized Crime would have gotten a sixth season on the network. This also means SVU has the distinction of being the only Law & Order show to have never been canceled (not counting the Canadian-based Law & Order Criminal Intent: Toronto).

Fans are naturally hopeful this will pave the way for Meloni to return to SVU, but the actor is currently attached to the upcoming NFL-themed Hulu drama The Land. Hopefully, he and other Organized Crime actors could at least make appearances on SVU.

We still have to wait on the fate of the mothership, Law & Order, but at least fans know the fate of the rest of the franchise as the new fall season builds.
