We know not all shows will make it through a year, but that doesn’t mean we have to be happy about cancellations. NBC opted to cancel four shows in 2024, and another one is on the move to a streaming platform. Let’s take a look back at what we won’t watch in 2025.
The 2023–2024 TV season was certainly an odd one. With the writers strike and then the actors strike throughout the summer and fall of 2023, it made it much harder to get our favorite shows back. Most of them were held for the midseason, but others were able to get fall slots.
You would think that the fall slots would allow for a success. Sadly, that wasn’t the case for one series in particular. Meanwhile, another was canceled even before the strike action started, but didn’t officially end until 2024.
The NBC shows that ended in 2024
Magnum PI was officially canceled in 2023, but it came with some semi-good news. There was some time to make sure there was an ending to the series. It wasn’t what we wanted, though, especially under the circumstances. This was a series canceled due to the upcoming strike action back in 2023. Cast options were coming up and the network chose not to renew them, after not even giving the show a chance with a good timeslot for the first half of the season.
Another show that ended in 2024 was La Brea. Again, this cancellation actually came through in November 2023, but NBC gave the show warning, allowing it to end. After all, it was a show that needed to end properly due to the way the twistiness of the story. The series go a six-part final season in 2024.
The NBC shows canceled in 2024
Some shows were canceled abruptly, and one of those was Quantum Leap. The sci-fi, time-traveling series was a revival rather than a reboot, following on from the disaster that was Sam Beckett’s leap through time. Despite the series being only one of a few airing in fall 2023, the series ended up not finding its audience to get a second season. The cancellation came after a cliffhanger at the end of season 2, leaving us wondering whether Ben and now Addison would ever make it back to their own time.
Extended Family premiered in December 2023 and ended in March 2024. It would end up only securing one season, as NBC opted to cancel it. The comedy series just couldn’t find its audience, leading to poor linear ratings and NBC not being able to justify keeping the show on the air.
One NBC show moved to Peacock in 2024
Finally, there was a cancellation that we worried about, but NBC ended up finding a way to keep it going. Law & Order: Organized Crime didn’t quite find the audience that the other two Law & Order shows did. On top of that, the form of storytelling didn’t work as well for broadcast TV. It meant a move to Peacock.
Fans are still waiting for Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5. It will air sometime in 2025. Maybe it will end up getting a linear spot on NBC in the future, similar to the likes of The Day of the Jackal’s series premiere, but there’s no guarantee of this.
