New sitcom Extended Family premiered on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023 on NBC. It's been a welcome addition to us TV fans who have been yearning for something new to watch following the writers and actors strikes. Now, the series has moved to Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m. ET on the network, and we're excited to see what else is in store for this family!

The show is centered around Jim and Julia, a divorced couple who's happy to now be separated. Though instead of shuffling their kids around between two homes, they decide to keep the kids in the house they grew up in, and the parents are the ones who take turns staying in the home. The family dynamic has now changed, especially with the addition of Julia's new boyfriend Trey. Cryer takes on the role of Jim Kearney, joined by Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison. We shared the Extended Family cast list below:

  • Jon Cryer as Jim Kearney
  • Abigail Spencer as Julia Mariano
  • Donald Faison as Trey Schultz
  • Finn Sweeney as Jimmy Jr.
  • Sofia Capanna as Grace

The premiere episode was very much an establishing one, and I feel like the direction and overall theme of the sitcom isn't quite clear just yet. However, we're still at the start of the 13-episode season. So let's see where it's headed! To be honest the show hasn't made me laugh just yet, but I do think we've gotten off to a good start. I'm willing to give it a chance.

And really I'm doing so because of Cryer and his fellow co-leads. The cast of this series deserves to be given a chance. Ready to learn more about the cast? Why do some of them look so familiar? We've got the answer below!

Jon Cryer as Jim Kearney

The comedic Jon Cryer takes on the role of Jim Kearney, the father of Jimmy and Grace and Julia's ex-husband. In the premiere episode, we learn that he and Julia were married for 17 years and came to the agreement that divorce was the best thing for the. And we truly see that though they can annoy each other, they still have a good relationship.

Where do you know him from?: Cryer started out with his role as Charles Cummings in the film No Small Affair. But it wasn't until his breakout character, Phil “Duckie” in the movie Pretty in Pink, that he started to get recognition. Even so, it took him a while to make his mark in the TV world and find success. That is until Two and a Half Men came along! He played one of the co-leads, Alan Harper. The actor is also known for portraying Lex Luthor (Earth-38) in Supergirl and the DC universe.

Abigail Spencer as Julia Mariano

Abigail Spencer is making a comeback of sorts with her role as Julia Mariano in Extended Family! We haven't seen the talented actress onscreen since 2021. Her character in the NBC series is a crisis manager, which is how she met her new boyfriend, Trey. The dynamic between her and ex-husband Jim is pretty funny but it's clear that the two put their children first.

Where do you know her from?: Spencer is best known for multiple roles, and her very first was Rebecca Tyree on All My Children. She was only 18 years old when she joined the popular soap opera! Another popular show she was on is Timeless where she took on the role of Lucy Preston. Her other acting credits include recurring roles on Grey's Anatomy and Suits.

Donald Faison as Trey Schultz

Having Donald Faison as one of the leads is a real treat as the actor is also a comedian, and he's already making us laugh. He plays Trey Schultz, a tech mogul and owner of the Boston Celtics. They happen to be Jim's favorite sports team. And, oh yeah. He's the one dating, and now engaged to, Julia. The two met after Julia needed to come in and clean up some harsh words he said to the press, which did nothing good to his image. Though Jim is happy about the divorce, he's still not very comfortable with Trey and pokes fun at him. And Trey is trying to find his way through the family.

Where do you know him from?: The actor and comedian is probably most recognized for playing Christopher Turk in Scrubs! His other notable characters are Murray Duvall in the film, and television adaptation, of Clueless, Petey Jones in Remember the Titans, as well as the character of Tracy on Felicity, and Phil Chase on The Exes.

Finn Sweeney as Jimmy Jr.

Finn Sweeney takes on the role of Jimmy Jr., Julia and Jim's son. Compared to his older sister, he seems to be taking the divorce pretty well based on the first episode so far. He isn't as affected as Grace. But we'll wait to see if this stays true.

Where do you know him from?: The young actor is still early in his career, though he has appeared in the shows Barry, Platonic starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, and American Crime Story.

Sofia Capanna as Grace

Last but not least is Sofia Capanna who plays teenager Grace, Jim and Julia's daughter and Jimmy Jr.'s older sister. She's still taking her parent's divorce hard and hasn't appreciated the way they've been celebrating their separation. Though no matter what, she knows she has the love of her family surrounding her.

Where do you know her from?: Like her onscreen brother, Capanna is just starting out in the industry. Before Extended Family, her other acting credit includes playing Jodeci in an episode of Bucktown. Though it was only the pilot that was filmed of the show, and it was not picked up for a full season order.
