While the NCIS season 24 premiere has everyone excited for the return of former Very Special Agent Tony DiNozzo, there are burning questions fans have about the events of the season 23 finale. Is there a possibility of tension between Agent Nick Torres and Agent Tim McGee when the show returns?

New promo photos for the first episode of season 24 were released. While they mostly centered around DiNozzo’s return, we did see a photo of McGee and Torres talking outside of a restaurant. McGee looked like he was trying to find out information while Nick stood in front of him with an ambulance in the background.

The season 23 finale found Torres getting suspicious of McGee’s newfound son, Mateo, who claimed to be interested in an internship at NCIS. He ultimately backed out, however, and lied to his dad when asked about his tour of the facility. It appeared something was going on, and Torres even followed him to find out what was happening. Mateo said someone was probably watching before ultimately showing he had a weapon.

When the episode ended, a single gunshot was heard, but audiences didn’t know who was shot. Based on the promo photo and the season 24 trailer showing McGee arriving in the area, it looks possible that Mateo was shot. Did Nick actually shoot him, or is it a misdirection? We can’t see McGee willing to work with Torres if he did something, so did someone else arrive, and we just didn’t see it?

Of course, we can’t always tell what is going on based on teaser photos or the trailer, which cuts bits and pieces of the episode together to make things exciting and pull audiences in. However, the synopsis does give us an idea of what is happening. In the episode “Wayward Son,” the episode will focus on the “fallout from the shooting involving McGee’s son” while they also look into a threat toward the Secretary of the Navy. This is what will bring Tony DiNozzo back into the NCIS orbit.

The trailer did give us an idea of McGee and Torres’s interactions, and it does have fans wondering what their relationship will look like moving forward. Will Mateo be okay, and if so, what was he doing at the NCIS building if he wasn’t actually touring the facility?

NCIS season 24 premieres on CBS on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 8/7c.
