The NCIS season 24 trailer highlighted the return of former Very Special Agent Tony DiNozzo, and it did not disappoint! With one month to go until NCIS returns, the trailer did not give any hints about the aftermath of the season finale, although I did wonder if it was obvious how Agent Tim McGee responded to Agent Nick Torres.
Former NCIS Deputy Director Gabriel Laroche is seen in what was formerly Director Leon Vance’s office, speaking about a security breach as the team is in the middle of an investigation. In response, he’s asked what “Mr. DiNozzo’s” opinion is regarding the matter.
As previously reported, Tony is back in town setting up a branch for his security firm. When we see him in the trailer, he’s in the elevator with McGee and Torres, remarking, “Very special non-Agent DiNozzo is back.” It looks like whatever has brought Tony back is big, and at one point, he warns that something is coming.
Amid scenes of the team chasing down bad guys, DiNozzo is heard complimenting McGee’s skills, prompting Nick to question a past story McGee told about Tony pulling a prank on him. McGee asks what he just said, and Tony talks about being “a new me, Tim. Accept it.”
Showrunner Steven D. Binder had explained that being a parent had changed Tony, giving him more perspective and maturity than before. While we expect that there still may be fun banter between him and the NCIS crew, we’re looking forward to seeing what his relationships are like, especially with the new members he hadn’t worked with.
There was also a brief clip of McGee going under caution tape, and we do wonder if this will be when the episode picks up where things left off with Torres and his son, Mateo. When the season finale ended, Torres realized Mateo was hiding something, and a single gunshot was heard after both were seen packing.
The trailer doesn’t make it obvious what McGee and Torres’s working relationship looks like in the wake of whatever happened with Mateo. So we wonder how things will play out once the show returns with Season 24.
Another eyebrow raiser from the trailer is the appearance of former Deputy Director Gabriel Laroche, who McGee had investigated in Season 23. We’re not sure why Laroche is at NCIS, especially in the Director’s office; however, in season 23 he had been the Associate Attorney General.
Based on his investigation into Vance’s daughter’s new company and then his decision to subsequently protect Vance’s legacy when he was connected to a slush fund, it appears he may be trying to put himself in the Director’s chair. Is it possible he is now the boss, and if so, how does that look for the team?
Nothing has been confirmed so far, but with just weeks to go before season 24 premieres, we’re excited to get some answers!
