As we get closer to the CBS May Upfronts on Wednesday, May 7, we know that final decisions need to be made. The 2025–2026 is getting closer to being finalized, and it means cancellations and series pick-ups are happening.
In some recent news, CBS has canceled the freshman comedy Poppa’s House. That means that post-The Neighborhood timeslot is open for a new show, and sure enough, CBS is filling it with a new comedy series. Will it be the spin-off series for The Neighborhood or a new comedy entirely?
CBS makes a surprising decision against The Neighborhood spin-off
While CBS has been looking at creating franchises recently, there has been some surprising decisions this year. The Neighborhood spin-off, which would see Malcolm and Marty head off to new pastures, is not going ahead.
The backdoor pilot for this spin-off is still going to air, though. It is The Neighborhood season 7 finale, which will air on Monday, May 5. That finale is a two-parter, with the backdoor pilot airing at 8:30/7:30c.
CBS opts for the DMV comedy series
Instead of building on a world we already know (and love), CBS is opting for a new comedy series. Harriet Dyer’s DMV comedy series has been picked up to series. Considering the way workplace comedies remain popular — just look at the interest in St. Denis Medical on NBC this year! — it’s not that surprising that CBS has opted for this series.
The single-cam comedy will follow the lives of the people who work at the DMV. Of course, this is a place everyone dreads going to, but what is it like for the people who have to process all the paperwork?
We’ll get to see the fall 2025 schedule on Wednesday, May 7 at the CBS Upfronts. Until then, it’s unclear if the DMV comedy (which sounds like it’s going to be titled DMV) will air in the fall or not. With no other comedy to air after The Neighborhood in the fall, it makes sense to put this one in the schedule.
