Matlock fans finally know when we’ll see Matty’s long-gone daughter in the series!

By now, CBS has stopped hiding the big secret of the new Matlock in their promos. Yet some may still be intrigued by how what looked like just another TV reboot delivered such a great twist. For the majority of the pilot, the setup was Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Oscar winner Kathy Bates), a former lawyer, joining the firm of Jacobson Moore. Matty claimed she needed money after her degenerate husband died and left her to raise her grandson with the boy’s mother long dead.

The final scene changes everything as the viewers learn that Matty is Madeline Kingston, a rich woman living with her very much alive husband Edwin and raising grandson Alfie. Matty had been telling the truth about how her daughter, Ellie, died of an opioid overdose. Matty believes someone at Jacobson Moore buried files that would have gotten the drugs off the streets and is going undercover to find out who.

It had been announced that Marnee Carpenter was cast as Ellie. Now, TVLine reports that the episode featuring her will be the 12th of the first season and air in mid-February. That looks to be a major episode to delve deeper into the show.

Why Ellie is so important to Matlock

As the show continued, we heard more about Ellie and why she was so important to Matty. Matty has acknowledged that Ellie was a long-time addict and Matty blinded herself to her problems until it was too late. That guilt drives her a bit as she still remembers the good times.

Ellie’s loss has affected Matty’s work in other ways. Her experience with an addict allowed Matty to tell a witness was on drugs. She’s also bonded with people over her loss and even helped win a case. It also bonded Matty with her boss, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), even if Matty feels guilty lying to her about who she is.

The flashbacks should help humanize Ellie, making viewers see who she really was and her struggles. Up until now, she’s just been a name Matty uses and as talented as Bates is, her words can’t make up for really seeing Ellie in person.

The flashbacks can help the series and Matty, with viewers now far more invested in seeing the woman and what led to her demise. It’ll also let us see Matty in a different time, maybe even more career-minded than we know today. It may be Matty didn't realize how important her family was until Ellie's death and more guilty over that. She’s already admitted failing her daughter in some regards and now wants to honor her memory.

Thus, Matlock fans are in for a treat when the show reveals more of Ellie and her struggles as the first season of the new hit is even more emotional.
