One of the highlights of season 1 of Boston Blue was the dynamic between Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez). Despite living in two different states, the former partners worked hard to spend time together, with Baez often traveling to Boston to see Danny. Each visit was sweeter than the last, with both finding ways to prioritize each other in the midst of their busy lives.

But while the two continuously reaffirmed their commitment to one another throughout season 1, we're not convinced it will last. There are many factors to consider with a long-distance relationship, and, unfortunately, Maria and Danny have many obstacles to overcome to get their happily ever after.

Danny and Maria are the classic friends-to-lovers trope. On Blue Bloods, the two started as partners and quickly became lifelong friends as they solved some of the NYPD's toughest cases together. And despite fans wanting to see them get together after the death of Danny's wife, Linda, their relationship was a slow burn. It wasn't until the Blue Bloods series finale that Danny finally asked his partner out for a pizza date, signifying the beginning of their romantic relationship.

When season 1 of Boston Blue premiered, it was clear the two had become quite serious since the Blue Bloods finale. Baez was even there when Danny got the news that Sean had been injured. She offered Danny her support and remained a great source of comfort for him throughout the season.

The last time we saw the lovers, they had reaffirmed their commitment to one another in the season 1 finale of Boston Blue. Maria had been concerned about their ability to continue their long-distance relationship. This was due in large part to her serving as a caretaker for her mother, while also caring for her own daughter. Not to mention Maria's demanding job as an NYPD detective. However, Danny reassured her they could make things work, even offering to move Maria's mother and daughter to Boston if he passed the sergeant's exam.

Maria moving to Boston with her family would definitely solve her and Danny's biggest issue: distance. But it's more of a fantasy than a realistic possibility, something Baez alluded to when she reminded Danny to take things slow after he threw out the suggestion.

Several factors would need to be considered for such a big change to take place. It would also be a big adjustment for everyone involved. Maria's mother isn't in the best of health, and her daughter is young. Further, we don't know what the move would do to Danny and Baez's relationship. Would it help or hurt?

Season 2 of Boston Blue needs to resolve Danny and Baez's distance issues. Is their love and commitment to one another touching? Yes. But realistically, the relationship can only handle so much instability before potentially cracking under the pressure. And both characters deserve better than that.

Boston Blue season 2 premieres Friday, Oct. 9, at 10/9c on CBS.
