Let me help clear one thing up for you right away, no Will Trent has not been canceled! The hit drama will be coming back for another season at ABC next year and season 3 is very much happening. The show was among one of the earliest ABC shows renewed, having been renewed way back in April; however, there is a very good reason fans feared the show was canceled when watching the season 2 finale.

Warning: Will Trent season 2 finale spoilers ahead!

In the Will Trent season 2 finale, we discovered that the serial killer targeting sex offenders was Crystal. For those who might have forgotten her, Crystal is the young girl who was sexually abused by Lenny and killed him in season 1 before Angie covered it up to prevent Lenny from ruining her life any further. It turns out that the troubled teen began luring out other sex offenders and then murdered them as she was still struggling with what Lenny had done to her and saw this as a way to get justice.

When Angie put the pieces together, she tracked Crystal down but when Angie confronted her, Crystal took off and hit her head on a rock while running off. Sadly, the blow to her head was a fatal one as Crystal died in Angie’s arms.

After Crystal’s death, Angie filled Will and Faith in on her connection to Crystal but did not reveal all the details. Unfortunately, Will put them together and figured out that Angie had covered for Crystal and that Crystal was the serial killer the GBI had been tracking down.

Will Trent isn’t canceled, but the season 2 finale made it seem like the show was ending

Before Will arrested Angie in the final moments of the season 2 finale, ABC had fans thinking the show was canceled due to a storyline that took many by surprise. Before the true ending was revealed, we saw Will walk into the precinct and propose to Angie. What followed was a montage that saw the couple growing old together and celebrating many major milestones in life including having a baby, growing their family, mourning the loss of Betty, and celebrating together as the two grew old together.

The sequence felt very much like one that would be used to end the series as it gave us a look into the future at what appeared to be a happy ending for Will and Angie. It was so perfect and emotional that it had many fans wondering if the show was ending

As the episode came to an end, searches spiked around questions about the show ending and being canceled as fans raced to the internet to see if the ending was a permanent ending. When the reality of what actually happened came, well, let’s just say fans were heartbroken when Angie was arrested and Will left town.

It's going to be interesting to see what comes next for the show, but we do have another season coming in 2025, so let the theories begin!
