Since its premiere in the spring of 2023, Will Trent has been one of ABC’s biggest new hits. Ramon Rodriguez plays the title role of an eccentric dyslexic agent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who aids in various mysteries while unraveling the secrets of his past.

The show has taken off with its nice mysteries, the great supporting cast and the terrific examination of Will and his problems. It earned a second season renewal, although that was delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. It finally debuted in February of 2024 with a third season renewal following.

However, ABC’s just released 2024-25 schedule reveals that both Will Trent and The Rookie are being held until mid-season 2025. The good news is that when it returns, Season 3 will have a full uninterrupted 18-episode run.

This may be a bit disappointing for fans to have to wait so long, but there is reason to hope this works out for Will Trent.

Why a delay is good for Will Trent

Speaking to TV Line, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich discussed how the delays for Rookie and Will Trent can work out for viewers.

"Will Trent is probably one of the bigger breakout dramas of the last two years. It felt like the best way to platform those shows for success was to launch them in January, when we have this huge promotional platform in New Years Rockin’ Eve as well as college sports and Christmas programming, and also to give these shows an uninterrupted run. They’re going to go straight through and that kind of momentum of original episodes week-in and week-out is just a very powerful engine for both of these shows."

It is quite aggravating for fans for a show to find a good groove and then have to take a few weeks off for reruns or events. Will Trent has succeeded with these shorter episodes and a mid-season return allows it to avoid the crush of other network premieres.

This promises a full, uninterrupted run of episodes, letting momentum grow week to week for more action and drama. It lets the writers build up more in storylines and avoid those always annoying weeks-long breaks for further episodes. It’s also smart for ABC to be able to promote fresh episodes every week and have a full season in the can first.

So, while it may be off-putting for some fans to have to wait so long for Will Trent’s return, the idea of a Season 3 without any breaks will make it worthwhile to keep up the fantastic show.

The Will Trent Season 2 finale airs Tuesday, May 21 at 8/7c on ABC.
