The Way Home season 2, episode 4, "Wake Me Up When September Ends," is aptly titled since the storyline in the the '00s plot takes place in October 2001. Alice time travels to a period in Canadian history when the globe was still processing the 9/11 attack against the United States. The war on terror was underway and Canadian troops were being sent to Afghanistan.

As someone who wasn't alive during that time, Alice understands the gravity of what happened, but she has no emotional connection to it or what it felt like for those reeling from the event. She does, however, connect to Five For Fighting's performance of "Superman (It's Not Easy)" at The Concert for New York City which took place on Oct. 20, 2001.

Alice was hiding while Kat was watching a telecast of the benefit. "Superman," which had already found an audience because of the "solace" it brought listeners, became synonymous with the everyday heroes that risked their lives to save people in the aftermath of the attack. The song grew in popularity after it was played over footage of first responders working day in and day out to find and recover everyone they could.

The teen's rendition of the track during open night mic is a nod to the history she bore witness to, in terms of her friends and family's reactions and perspectives. Her jump to the past put into context why her father, Brady, had proposed to her mom, Kat, so young. It wasn't just about their love for one another but also an acknowledgement that time is precious and that you need to hold the ones you love close.

"Superman (It's Not Easy)" lyrics via Genius:

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
I'm just out to find
The better part of me

I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy to be me

I wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
'Bout a home I'll never see

It may sound absurd, but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed, but won’t you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
And it's not easy to be me

Up, up, and away, away from me
Well, it's alright
You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy or anything

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Diggin' for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Lookin' for special things inside of me

Inside of me
Inside of me
Yeah, inside of me
Inside of me
I’m only a man in a funny red sheet
I’m only a man lookin' for a dream
I’m only a man in a funny red sheet
And it's not easy, hoo, hoo, hoo
It's not easy to be me
