Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is about to hit streaming, which leads to the question of just how much the last entry in the DCEU actually made at the box office! Find out the answer!

The film wasn’t meant to be the end of an era. As soon as 2018’s Aquaman became a smash hit hailed for its fun vibe, work was underway for a sequel. There was talk of a spin-off horror-based movie, but that was dropped for a more straightforward adventure.

James Momoa reprised his role of Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, now king of Atlantis, and raising a child with love, Mera (Amber Heard). When his archenemy Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) gained a mystical trident to attack, Arthur had to enlist the help of his rival and half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to fight Manta off and stop him from starting a war in the ocean.

The production hit numerous issues, from the budget to filming amid the pandemic to the real-life controversy around Heard’s lawsuit against Johnny Depp. But the big blow came when James Gunn took over as head of DC Comics films, and thus, Lost Kingdom would be the last entry in the original DCEU.

So, as the film hits streaming, just how much was its final box office take?

How much did Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom actually make?

The movie opened theatrically on Dec. 22, 2023, with a four-day total of $38.3 million, the fourth-lowest of the DCEU. Its second weekend saw it drop to second place behind Wonka

Per Collider, at the end of its theatrical run on Feb. 24, 2024, the film had made $434 million at the global box office. That may sound good, except for how the budget was estimated at $215 million, with the possibility it was even higher with marketing costs. That’s led to debate on whether the movie has broken even, let alone made a profit.

The higher costs were mostly due to various reshoots and changes because of Gunn taking over the DCEU. The film did look impressive on screen, but it’s also a bit sad that the final entry in the DCEU didn’t send it out with a box office bang.
