August 2024: 81 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month
August is considered the "dog days of summer" but there's a lot of TV to check out! Here's the highlights of new shows to watch!
Usually, August is a light month for TV, with folks getting ready for the network seasons. But thanks to streaming, there's a score of series to enjoy and it's amazing how many shows are hitting new seasons this month! From the return of big hits to some daring new programs, here's a guide to the whopping 81 shows on broadcast and streaming this month!
The Lord of the Rings the Rings Of Power season 2 (Prime Video, August 29)
The second season of the Prime Video hit ups the stakes big time. Now that she knows her supposed friend Halbdrand (Charles Vickers) is truly the Dark Lord Sauron, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) is out to stop him. That means crafting the first of the Rings of Power for the elves while Sauron takes on a new form to craft his own set. This will set up the epic original War for the Rings as we'll get more on the elves, dwarves, the dangerous Barrow-Wights and how the Hobbits came to be.
Emily In Paris season 4 part 1 (Netflix, August 15)
The Netflix hit kicks off the first half of season 4 with Emily still trying to sort out her feelings for both Camille and Gabriel. Gabriel having a baby with his ex complicates matters as we can also expect turmoil at the fashion office, Mindy and her band try to make it to Eurovision and new characters arrive from Laurent's daughter to Marcello's mom. Through it all, Emily has to figure out which of her two hunky suitors has her heart as the first four episodes of the new season set the stage for more Parisian fun.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 (Netflix, August 8)
The final season of Netflix's wild comic book adaptation has the Hargreeves being thrust into a new world where they don't have their superpowers. As they try to adjust, it's not long before they discover yet another apocalyptic threat only they can stop…provided they can get along long enough to do it. Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally star as sinister scientists as the ever-unpredictable series looks to end its run with a wild bang.
SEAL Team season 7 (Paramount+, August 11)
The final season of the CBS/Paramount+ series picks up with the team dealing with the public fallout of Jason (David Boreanaz) talking out about his mental health issues with other SEALs chiming in. That has the team sidelined to what's supposed to be a "loser" assignment in Sweden. As fate would have it, when a terrorist attack occurs there, Bravo takes the lead tracking down who's responsible. With Davis aiding in the field and a new team member bringing conflict, the final ride for Bravo looks to be a great capper to the show.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (Netflix, August 1)
Now on Netflix is this six-episode adaptation of the popular YA novel. Emma Myers of Wednesday plays a British teen who looks into a murder in her small town for a class project. She becomes convinced the accused killer was innocent and starts hunting for the truth only to find the townspeople would rather not know. The show is a nice quick watch to make for a compelling mystery and gives Myers a starring role to shine for one "Good" show.
Only Murders In The Building Season 4 (Hulu, August 27)
It's the return of the beloved Hulu comedy as Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) are heading to Hollywood! The main plotline is the trio being brought onto a movie based on the season 1 mystery and, naturally, a bit thrown by the cast (which includes Eva Longoria as Mabel). They're also trying to find out who killed Charles' body double (Jane Lynch) and another mystery, too. Meryl Streep is also back, along with the quick wit that's made this show a huge fan favorite.
Batman: Caped Crusader (August 1)
For fans of the 1990s Batman the Animated Series, this is up your alley. That it comes from that show's creator, Bruce Timm, only adds to it as we get a new take on the Dark Knight, emphasizing him as a detective more than a superhero. The great voice cast includes Christina Ricci as Catwoman, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn and Minnie Driver as a female Penguin. The fantastic art-deco animation and throwback style fits Batman, making this an animated show to appeal to all comic book fans.
Mr. Throwback (Peacock, August 8)
The NBA season may be done but this Peacock show can appeal to basketball fans. This mockumentary follows Danny (Adam Pally), a one-time basketball prodigy who's hit hard times as a sports memorabilia-selling joke. Luckily, he can always count on help from his former teammate and friend: 4-time NBA Champion MVP Steph Curry, playing a fictionalized version of himself. The comedy plays on Curry trying to help Danny bounce back with various hijinks in what looks like a fun new comedy for even non-NBA fans to enjoy.
Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount+, August 9)
If you loved last summer's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, you'll enjoy this new show! The movie's voice cast returns as the Turtles, aided by April O'Neil, handle fighting crime as well as their teenage lives. But when a deadly new enemy called Bishop separates them, the Turtles must face being on their own for the first time as they try to get back to each other. The animation looks good and the fun turns make this a great bridge between the movie and the planned sequels and proves that, after four decades, the Heroes in a Halfshell are still a hit with audiences.
Industry season 3 (HBO, August 11)
HBO's daring black comedy is back and following season 2's shocking finale of Harper being fired by Pierpoint. Yasmin and Robert are still there, handling a firm that is growing more toxic as Yasmin may accidentally fall into an embezzlement scandal. Kit Harington joins the cast as an energy company CEO who hires Pierpoint and has some intriguing power plays with Yasmin and Robert. The company itself may be in major trouble which is good news for fans of this juice drama.
Bad Monkey (Apple TV+, August 14)
Any TV show based on the books of Carl Hiaasen is going to be a blast. This adaptation of the best-selling author's novel stars Vince Vaughn as a former cop who, due to various issues, is now a restaurant inspector in South Florida. When he uncovers a severed arm at one spot, the search for answers leads to a complex web of corruption. Hiaasen's standard black comedy is on display with a great supporting cast of Michelle Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Meredith Hagner and more to make for another Apple TV+ crime show to focus on.
KAOS (Netflix, August 29)
Jeff Goldblum as the Greek god Zeus? That alone makes this Netflix series a must-watch. This comedy has Zeus hit by what seems to be the god version of middle-age, freaking out over showing wrinkles and a prophecy that three humans will ultimately destroy him. As he lashes out in a way that could wreck reality, those humans learn of their connection to each other and gods for a wild clash. The cast includes Janet McTeer as Hera, David Thewlis as Hades and Debi Mazar as Medusa for a fun new take on the Greek myths.
