Death and Other Details obviously wasn't filmed on a cruise ship so where was it filmed?

Death and Other Details may be set on a cruise ship but where was this new Hulu mystery series really filmed?

Death and Other Details is coming to Hulu and looks to be a terrific thriller of a murder mystery set on a cruise ship. But was it actually filmed at sea?

Amid the rise of whodunit TV shows, Death and Other Details looks to be a big one. The plotline is a classic setup as a guest list of mostly wealthy folks are taking a cruise when one is found murdered in a supposedly locked room.

Suspicion soon falls on Imogene Scott (Violett Beane), who was seen near the murder site. Luckily, on board is Rufus Coteworth (Mandy Patinkin), the world's greatest detective, who believes Imogene is innocent. However, they have a bad history, as Imogene blames Rufus for never solving her mother's long-ago murder.

Despite that, the pair work together and have only 24 hours before the ship docks and Interpol takes over. So they go through the suspects only to find a lot of people who wanted the victim dead.

The show looks to use the cruise ship setting nicely, with secrets lurking behind every corner and even a few chase scenes to boot. So, was it filmed on an actual ship or not?

Where was Death And Other Details really filmed?

As great and glamorous as the show may be, the illusion of it being on a cruise ship is just that. Per IMDB, most of the filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, with some location filming in Gibraltar.

For the ship itself, most of the scenes filmed on it were actually the soundstages of Skydance Studios. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, creators Mike Weiss, Heidi Cole McAdams, and Marc Webb explained that because no real cruise ship could match their vision of a remodeled 1940s yacht, they had to create their own.

""Our incredibly talented production designer James Philpott recreated those details on stage. The scale of our sets — built to match the scale of those massive ships — was almost embarrassing. Our dining hall is two stories tall and could have hosted a high-end wedding if it wasn't for all the camera equipment.""

A little computer magic to flesh it out, and on-screen, it looks like a real cruise ship sailing the waters. However, as with so much else on Death And Other Details, all is not what it seems, as the cast was nowhere near the ocean for this mystery cruise.
