Throughout the years, there have been several projects featuring the popular character of Sherlock Holmes, from a television series to a Netflix movie. However, our favorite take on the super detective are the movies starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, Sherlock's most loyal friend.
Sherlock Holmes opened in theaters in 2009, accumulating over $524 thousand at the box office worldwide. A sequel, titled Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, followed two years later on Dec. 16, 2011. Since then, there have been rumors of a third movie in the works, but it's been just over 12 years. Is a third movie even happening at this point?
The 2010s were huge for actor Robert Downey Jr., arguably the King of Marvel. Avengers: Endgame, the last movie in the MCU franchise that features RDJ, wasn't released until 2019. This goes without saying, but the star has been keeping busy, even starring in a few projects in between the MCU. Jude Law has also been busy on several projects, including stepping into the MCU world in Captain Marvel. Let's not forget, another thing that has delayed this movie was the pandemic. And, most recently, the Hollywood strikes. Now, I think a third Sherlock Holmes movie should have been more of a priority long before both major events, but I digress.
Yes, a third Sherlock Holmes movie is still in the works, Robert Downey Jr. teases
According to The Direct, Robert Downey Jr.'s wife, Susan Downey, revealed that Sherlock Holmes 3 is still a priority for RDJ. Downey told the source that the movie will happen, but only "when it's right" and "with the right people."
It's great to know that a third movie is still in talks to happen, but with no date in sight, our recommendation is that you don't think too much about it. I mean, we've gone 12 years, what's another year or two? Hidden Remote will do its best to keep you updated on anything we learn. In the meantime, there are plenty of movies to enjoy. If you miss RDJ, check him out in Oppenheimer if you haven't already. The actor won a Golden Globe for his performance in the highly acclaimed movie.
