Heading into the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Friends fans expected for Matthew Perry to be included in the night's In Memoriam special; however, no one was quite prepared for the emotional tribute that the Television Academy had planned.
During the telecast, Perry received a special tribute during the In Memoriam segment which honored some of the many stars we lost in 2023. The tribute began with Charlie Puth and singer-songwriter duo The War and Treaty performing a rendition of Puth's "See You Again" as images of those we lost flashed across the screen. The performance then shifted into a stripped-down cover of The Rembrandts' "I'll Be There for You" ramping up to the Emmy's celebration of Perry who passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 28, 2023, at age 54.
It was a fitting and moving tribute to the late Perry, who was no stranger to the Emmys, having been nominated five times over the course of his career including for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends. While the Friends cast might not have been in attendance, it was a fitting sendoff for the late Perry and there was not a dry eye among the Friends fandom watching at home when Puth and The War and Treaty began singing the Friends theme song.
