Grey Sloan Memorial is about to lose an intern in Grey's Anatomy
The current surgical class at Grey Sloan Memorial is about to drop to four interns. One intern is leaving in Grey’s Anatomy season 21.
The news came from Deadline just days after the announcement that Jake Borelli will leave the series after seven seasons. The show is also going to see some of the veteran cast members cut from some episodes as a way to save money. So, in a way, the loss of an intern isn’t all that surprising. That doesn’t mean we’re happy about it.
Midori Francis is leaving Grey’s Anatomy during season 21
We’ll be saying goodbye to Mika Yasuda, played by Midori Francis. Yasuda was one of the new interns who entered the show at the start of season 19. Her class of interns brought a reboot feel to the series, helping to get the show out of a bit of a slump that it was in up to that point.
However, she’s not leaving at the end of this season. Francis is reportedly in negotiations to appear in some episodes of season 21. This will allow the writers time to craft an exit storyline for the character, which fans will appreciate. Grey’s Anatomy does have a habit of killing off characters or crafting poor exits (yes, I’m looking at Karev’s exit) with departures, so hopefully this one and Borelli’s exits see characters head off to bright pastures new.
Yasuda was a character who helped to inspire change to the intern program at Grey Sloan Memorial. Struggling for money to pay off her student loans, she started working at Joe’s Bar. However, that cause problems with sleep deprivation at the hospital and at the bar.
Helm walked into Chief Teddy Altman’s office demanding change happen. The hospital is losing good doctors because interns have to moonlight to be able to afford life. That shouldn’t be the case when these interns are learning how to save the lives of people. We ended up seeing a relationship blossom between Helm and Yasuda after this.
Arguably, Yasuda (and the other interns) haven’t been utilized as much as they could be. They have all been kept out of the OR under Bailey’s new intern program until recently. It’s meant we haven’t really got to see their surgical skills, but we have had a chance to see their skills in other parts of the hospital. Yasuda’s skill is empathizing with her patients, understanding that mental health is just as important as physical health and that everyone deserves compassion.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
