Hacks is finally returning for Season 3, and the first teaser hints at some of the great times for the hit HBO comedy. What antics can we expect this season?

It’s been a long wait for fans of the hit HBO comedy. For newbies, it follows Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a veteran stand-up comic told she has to reinvent herself for a new generation. She hires writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), and the pair soon form a strange partnership while traveling the country.

The show has been a huge success, with Smart winning numerous awards, including two Emmys. Season 3 was set to begin production in late 2022 but paused in early 2023 as Smart had to undergo emergency surgery. Filming commenced in March, only to shut down due to the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes. With those finished, the show is ready to premiere May 2 on MAX.

After teasing news for a while, HBO has revealed the first teaser, and it gives a hint at the fun for Season 3.

What’s happening in Season 3 of Hacks?

The trailer opens with Deborah and Ava meeting in an elevator in what looks like the first time they’ve reunited since Ava left in the Season 2 finale to try and make it on her own. It appears circumstances are pushing them together again, including Ava being Deborah’s caddy for a golf game.

We get glimpses of other characters, from DJ (Kaitlin Olsen) hosting a game show to agent Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and goofball assistant Kayla (Megan Statler) still working together. There are also glimpses of Ava with another woman and Deborah’s warehouse-sized wardrobe and a photo shoot.

It ends with an argument between Deborah and Ava on how problematic Deborah’s jokes can be, showing Hacks still retains its sharp humor.

Season 3 will have notable guest stars such as Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Bucatinsky, George Wallace, and Tony Goldwyn to spark things up. It's unsure yet of who they play as some might be portraying themselves in a sarcastic light.

The teaser shows Hacks hasn’t lost any of its wicked wit or fun friendship that should make Season 3 a bigger year than ever.

Hacks Season 3 premieres May 2 on Max.
