If a Blue Bloods spin-off happens it won't be about Danny Reagan, here's why!
Blue Bloods fans are hoping for some sort of spinoff of the hit drama but it may not involve one Reagan! Here's why!
Fans of Blue Bloods are still upset the long-running CBS drama will be ending with the second half of season 14 this fall. The show remains a huge ratings hit and both cast and crew have been public about hoping it can continue. CBS has reversed course before on renewing a canceled series and the ratings should be a push.
Sadly, it looks like it's definite that Blue Bloods is going to end. However, fans are still hoping for at least the chances of a spin-off of some sort. It is odd that in 14 seasons, CBS has never tried a "backdoor pilot" for a spin-off set elsewhere in the NYPD, the courts, fire stations or anything like it. There are scores of characters who could support one, with one Reagan in particular mentioned.
That's Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), the elder son and top detective. He's been a huge focus on the show, following the family tradition of becoming a cop and handling the tragic death of his wife, Linda. A spin-off on Danny would make sense, maybe even the idea of him leaving New York for a new city to get away from the rest of the Reagans (thus cutting on the costs of the other actors).
As it turns out, fans just may have gotten that spin-off, only for someone at CBS to say no.
Why a Blue Bloods spin-off about Danny Reagan was nixed
In a long talk with Deadline, CBS Studios President David Stapf talked about various projects and was asked about Blue Bloods. He indicated there have been some spin-off pitches involving Danny, but they were vetoed as they want to find the right way to expand this universe.
"We don't have anything that's going to be in development soon but it's a brand, a title and a show that is beloved. We've got to get it right so we're taking our time and trying to figure it out, okay, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there's still time for us to figure that out."
It makes sense that the producers are more focused on wrapping the series up before they make plans for any spin-off. It's also likely they still hold out hope that just maybe CBS reverses course to give it at least one more year. Maybe the last episodes will open the door for a spin-off and be a great way to keep up Blue Bloods' legacy.
It might also be better a show with Danny didn't move forward since he's so tied into his family that doing a series on him without the other Reagans popping up doesn't make much sense. A spin-off might be better on a non-Reagan character who's still linked to the original show but doesn't have a deep commitment to the rest of the cast of characters.
As of now, We still have a few months before Blue Bloods makes its farewell tour as fans look forward to the last episodes more than a spin-off opportunity.
Blue Bloods season 14B will air Fridays at 10/9c this fall on CBS.
