Jack Gibson's fate as a firefighter on Station 19 doesn't look good thanks to this latest update
Station 19 fans are frantic to learn Jack Gibson's fate for the seventh and final season. However, a new update hints that it won't be a pleasant outcome for the beloved firefighter!
Season 6 was a rough one for Grey Damon's character. Having discovered his birth parents gave him up only to have a great family without him, Jack was on a downward spiral, basically quitting the team, shacking up with an ex-girlfriend and drinking.
Jack finally pulled himself out of it to get back on the team, even though he still had problems, such as meeting his biological sister and a few screw-ups here and there. Still, Jack was doing his best in the big season 6 finale, with the squad helping in a disaster at the Fireman's Gala.
Just as it looked like he had redeemed himself by saving a waitress, he suddenly collapsed from internal injuries. That was the cliffhanger, which lasted longer than planned due to season 7 being delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. So what is Jack's fate in the final season? Here's what we know!
Is Jack going to die in Station 19 season 7?
Speaking to TV Line about their season 7 plans, showrunners Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige, the pair were coy on whether or not Jack survives. There's been no word on Damon leaving the series but then again, Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 have been known to shockingly kill off a character with no prior warning.
Paige talked of how the "expiration date" on a firefighter's career played a part in crafting Jack's fate.
"I personally have felt that an underexplored part of firefighting, as it's represented in media, is the expiration date on a firefighter's career. When we talk about, say, dancers, we always talk about how it's a short career. But for firefighters, it can be a similarly devastating dream to hold. It can be taken away from you quite quickly for a myriad of reasons, one of which is death, one of which is injury. To hold this dream with all the risks that it entails and to have it taken from you is a powerful part of this story that is often overlooked."
Clack added that they used their experience talking to real firefighters to aid in the storyline.
"We visit fire stations every season. The fire station we went to this time was being led by the media-relations person for the fire department, who was a firefighter, and this is now his duty in the department. And he was telling us about the physical and psychological toll that firefighting can have, and that sometimes you have to look beyond the immediate and find who you are other than that. We took that to heart and took that message in."
Now, this doesn't mean Jack will die, as it's possible he's simply badly injured. However, combined with his personal problems and the chances some firefighters will be let go in budget cuts, Jack may be off the team and his career ended because of what happened.
Jack has already been through so much in the last few years and a brush with death may make him decide to retire from such a dangerous life and find a new one for himself. It would be better than if he were to have been revealed as dying when season 7 begins, but one way or another, it sounds as if Jack's days on Station 19 may be more numbered than fans hoped.
Station 19 season 7 premieres Thursday, March 14 at 10/9c on ABC.
