Jason Mraz tried to get eliminated from Dancing with the Stars for a wild reason
By Sabrina Reed
We, as Dancing with the Stars fans, know how hard the competition is for the celebrity contestants on the show. Most of them have no dance experience and those that do typically haven't been regularly spending hours in the studio like they did when dancing was a part of their lives. The challenge isn't just in the choreography they have to learn (though that's pretty taxing!), it's also in navigating the at home audience component of the show.
Sometimes those of us watching along can be more critical than the professionals judging the competition and it can impact the voting. It's no wonder any of contestants are nervous or even down right terrified at the start of the season. It wouldn't be a shock to learn someone wanted to hang up their dancing shoes and beat a quick retreat back to the safety of their usual routine. But color me surprised by a recent confession from season 32 fan favorite, beloved artist Jason Mraz, who actually tried to get himself eliminated early.
Deadline reports Mraz shared this revelation on Tyler Ferguson's podcast Dinner's On Me with the following statement:
"Two or three weeks in, I realized I’m probably going to be here the whole time and I’m terrified and I have to cancel all my plans for the entire rest of the year, and I’m missing my cat terribly. And I start telling my friends, ‘Stop voting for me! 'It’s like the only way I can get off this show is if I don’t get enough votes. And I even told the producers, ‘I’m good. I can go home now, thank you so much for the honor,’ and they said, ‘We can’t do anything about you being here.’ So the only thing I could do is ask friends to vote for someone else."
Stress over Dancing with the Stars eating up your life and your free time, particularly when you're a working actor or musician is to be expected. Though Mraz going as far as to ask his friends to vote for someone else isn't. But, hey, that's one way to try to get off the show. Personally, I'm touched by his inclusion of missing his cat among the reasons why he wanted to leave the competition. As a fellow cat person, I get it. Those little loafs can get you through practically anything.
Still, searching for a way to depart a show because you miss your cat is a new one for me. It's a tad wild but, honestly, it's just makes me even more of a Jason Mraz fan. As he said, he even tried to talk to the producers about leaving but that was a no go, it would be up to the fans. He wouldn't have sabotaged his and his pro dancer Daniella Karagach's efforts so there was nothing left to do besides dance his heart out and let the chips fall where they may.
Though funnily enough, despite his initial jitters and fear over being on the show, Mraz would return for another season of Dancing with the Stars if given the option. But that could be because he came oh so close to winning the Len Goodman Mirrorball trophy the first time around.
" Having made it all the way to the very end, made it to the buzzer, I look back and laugh and think, well, maybe if I’d actually given a sh-t! So, I would do it all over again if I could and I would try really hard. Maybe, they’ll have a Dancing with the Stars All-Star season. I would go back."
So perhaps we'll see Mraz light up the dancefloor again if there is an All-Star season and, if someone can look into it over at Disney, his cat can come along for at least some of the ride. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more news and coverage!
