Katy Perry might not be the only judge leaving American Idol
By Sabrina Reed
The search has been on for Katy Perry's replacement on American Idol since she announced she'd be leaving the singing competition after season 22. But, while she's focused on her upcoming album and the release of her single, "Woman's World," on July 11, her former colleagues have their minds on the show's twenty-third season and whether or not they'll be a part of it.
In an interview with Billboard, country star Luke Bryan spoke about the wait to hear back from Disney on who will be on the judges' panel in the new season.
"It’s been interesting. It’s been something Disney been really tightlipped about with me and Lionel and Ryan. We currently haven’t heard what the story is on who’s coming back, and if Lionel and I are coming back. I think Disney is just trying to figure out what they want to do and we’re just kind of sitting back and waiting until they decide."
I don't think anyone expected there to be a potential cast shake-up with Perry's departure but, based on Bryan's words, that may be on the table. To be honest, a change in the judges panel does make sense. Perry, Bryan, and Lionel Richie have been the faces of the show since its move to ABC in its sixteenth season which debuted in 2018. Disney might want to test the waters with a new dynamic trio now that Perry has parted ways with the series.
Right now though the focus is on which Pop diva is going to take over the reins for Perry. Kelly Clarkson already ruled herself out citing a desire to remain on the East Coast and close to her children. P!nk isn't a likely possibility as she's said the following on the matter: "I don’t like hurting people’s feelings … I like my day job.”
Meghan Trainor, however, has been campaigning for the gig. Being an American Idol judge is a dream of hers so she'd be a sure thing if the House of Mouse comes knocking with an offer. A decision on the judges for season 23 is expected to come later this summer. In the meantime, we're likely to hear more on just who is in the running to join the team.
Bryan shared that he believes both Meghan Trainor and P!nk have come up as options. As has Miley Cyrus. She served as a guest mentor during the show's ninth season in 2010. Having been a coach on The Voice for seasons 11 and 13, she is familiar with judging and mentoring talent. Though it's possible Disney may give us a wild card pick, an artist who fits the show but we could have never guessed.
