Katy Perry is preparing to leave American Idol, no doubt kick-starting a search for her replacement. However, the pop star has already shared who she'd love to see take her spot on the judge's table and it's a surprising name!

It's been 15 years since Katy Perry exploded onto the music scene with her hit "I Kissed A Girl." That would be followed by scores of other hit songs, from "Hot n Cold" to "Firework." Perry became a sensation with her wild style. She's done everything from winning scores of awards to voicing Smurfette in The Smurfs movies to playing the halftime show at the Super Bowl and singing at President Joe Biden's inauguration.

In 2018, Perry added to her resume by signing a $25 million deal to be one of the judges on ABC's revival of American Idol. She, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Ritchie have done a good job judging the contestants and handling the fun of the show, with Perry doing an occasional performance.

Perry announced that the current season 22 will be her last as a judge. It's little surprise as Idol has a history of judges coming and going but her departure is the first big shift for the ABC version. So who does Perry think should replace her?

Speaking to People Magazine, Perry talked about her exit from the show and how she just felt it was time to move on. When it came to who should replace her, she had a surprising name in mind.

"I gotta say Jelly Roll was crazy when he came on the show. He could run for president, he could be my pastor, I might go back to church for him. He could sell me anything... To have any of these guys plus Jelly on the show would be amazing. I love you, Jelly!"

For those who may not know, Jason Bradley DeFord is a rare breed--a country music rapper. He's become a popular name in country music circles with his fun songs like "Son of a Sinner," which earned him three CMT Awards. He also won the CMA Award for Best New Artist.

Jelly Roll appeared on the April 8 episode of Idol to perform his new song "Halfway to Hell" and serve as a mentor judge to one group. While not a household name like others, his charisma might do well on the judge's table, and he knows about being thrust into the spotlight so suddenly.

Regardless of who is chosen, Perry said she ultimately wants a "truth-teller. I want someone that is not afraid to tell the truth in a graceful way."

ABC will have time before season 23 to find Perry's replacement and no doubt, a lot of big names are going to be thrown about. It's probable they go for someone else, but Perry's push for Jelly Roll gives him more of a shot. Regardless of who gets on the bench, they'll have some big shoes to fill to match the fun Perry brought to the American Idol table.

American Idol season 22 airs Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
